Currently looking at a new car for family duties, and have narrowed it down to the following :

-Mercedes A Class A200 CDI AMG Sport or A220 CDI AMG Sport

-Golf GTD Manual

Any opinions? The styling on the new A Class is great, but not too sure on the 135bhp engine in the A200.

If it was an A45 vs the GTD - I'd agree!

doing a lot of miles?

I've driven both and personally I'd go for the Golf. The A-Class looks a bit cooler and the interior is a bit more interesting but the GTD is more comfortable, practical, drives better and is quicker.

As per poster above I'd prefer the A45 even over any Golf or A3 equivilent, even the R or S3.

Yes, it's going to doing reasonable miles - thanks for the input. From having a look at the price points, it seems that it'll be more than likely the A200 rather than the A220, so thats 134bhp in the A Class compared to 184 in the GTD.

hmmmm, based upon the HP difference alone then it would seem that the Golf is the way to go. frown Shame though, I know a lot don't like the look of the A Class, inside or out, however I just think it's just a bit different.

GTD has my vote; although a little common now days.

You'd have to add to much to the A-Class to get a decent spec, and what is going on with the slow Merc engines (A45 obviously aside). Looks bloody good though.

Golf

VW 100% know what they are doing in this sector and it's arguably the best hatchback on the market. Mercedes are still relative newcomers to the game and the A-Class whilst good isn't quite perfect.

My missus had the same dilemma and prefered the styling of the Merc (as do I) but was swayed by the difference in power and toys that come as standard on the Golf.

Also I think the Merc has a lot of wind noise issues and generally gets pretty poor reviews in the motoring mags.

For my taste that's a real case of getting stuck between a rock and a hard place. Both are expensive models of a very mainstream car. But I guess some folk are willing to splash serious cash at a hatchback.

Fair point, yes I was, but then I think it looks stunning. It turns like a fly, still looks like a hatch, but in my view just enhances things. A45/R/S3 have all been moved quite a step away from the bog standard car too IMO, it's not all show and no go in any of them thumbup
