evening all.

I've been reviewing the running costs of my daily A8 and it's looking a bit steep.

Current 31p a mile using the PH garage with all costs.

The cost of fuel is a little eye watering and tyres aren't cheap either.

Just wondering if it would be possible to reduce the costs a bit with a different car?

Target would be 20ppm over 30k a year. About 60-70 percent motorway.

Possible in a comfy, reliable, automatic car?

That's £6k per annum?

At 45 mpg that's about £4k in fuel leaving £2k for depreciation/maintenance/insurance/tyres

?

Sorry, doesn't have to include depreciation. this is running costs, fuel, maintenance, tyres, tax, insurance, etc.

Cheers

£9000 per annum! (6k in diesel alone).

45mpg would save £1300 ish?

Is all of that personal mileage or are you claiming it back for business?

I thought the target was 30,000 @ 20p = £6k?

about 20k work, I get 40p a mile, wanting more to go towards depreciation, 10ppm isnt enough! a "free" car would be nice. My mondeo pretty much did it and that's my thinking at the moment, another 2.0 TDI mondeo.

So, at 45 mpg you'll spend £4k on fuel. That leaves £2k for the rest. 30,000 is a set and a half of tyres? £600 (budget remoulds), Insurance £400 (if you are old) and £1000 for everything else.

I still like this depreciation free model...makes motoring so much cheaper! hehe

It's the future! Just close your eyes and pretend it doesn't exist! smile

The 20ppm target is to free up some more of the 40ppm I get for work to help offset the dreaded depreciation! so 30ppm incl depreciation would be great (which I think I managed with the old mondeo) as I'd get a free car, and personal mileage!

however when I got the mondeo 6k got you a 3 year old, 50k miler... I think they are a bit more now, haven't really looked.

Just after other ideas outside of the dull old mondeo.

A 420D M Sport could probably make for free motoring with a lease deal. I haven't seen any for 30k though so that may hurt it but if you can claim back on 2/3 of your journeys maybe it's an option?

EDIT - Sweeping statements by manmaths.xlsx suggests that if a lease was £300 per month and you can claim back 20k at 40ppm with 10k personal you're looking at maybe £50 per month after tax, insurance, a tyre here and there and servicing.

I doubt these are the real costs.
The fuel itself is about 20p/mile.
From experience NON-fuel costs of less than 20p/mile are very good.
I think the official numbers for the cheapest cars to run are around 17p/mile.

mk4.5 Mondeo 2l tdci would be my choice here,

good 3 1/2 to 4yr old example preferably ex fleet with a good conclusive service history and evidence of a fresh clutch and flywheel would be a bonus too.

will quite happily return mid 50's on a long motorway run, comfy and you will be falling over them so plenty of choice-be picky theres millions of them

Of course its possible!

See my RR thread for my previous Volvo V70 D5:

http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...

16p per mile, incl. depreciation.

Comfy, well made, reliable, awesome stereo etc. Really a super car.

£5k will get you a very nice example indeed. eg:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2005-Volvo-V70-D5-SE-AUT...

or

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2005-Volvo-V70-2-4-D5-SE...

I did 30k miles in mine over about 18months.
Or you could spend £6k (+part ex) on a Ph3, and be left driving a V50 while yours generates an as yet undefined bill (but at least £1100 so far), like I did. Harrumph.

Disclaimer: I know that this is not typical of Volvos, and that maintenance costs are as unpredictable as the weather, I'm just bitter to not be getting 20ppm.
