£5000 Luxobarge
Discussion
FIrstly, apologies if there is yet another repeat. Did some searching but not yet sure. Anyway...
Looking to get something around the £5000 mark, usually for longer journeys (with family) or when the GT86 needs to stay home. Old man suggested a 3 series, but I figured I may as well get something with a little more luxury (read that in an american accent). Had a look at a lovely Phaeton V6 TDI today.
Can anyone think of viable alternatives? The S-Class is too common, and the in-budget 7 series look horrible. Don't like the A8 either. The Lexus LS is also tempting (06-onwards facelift) but they are quite a bit more dear compared to the Phaeton. General consensus says V10 over V6 because of extra kit. Anyone here with experience on them?

I quite like the outside, but inside it feels like sitting in a 1650s cottage. I suppose I've mostly narrowed down the choices myself. Or rather I'm being too picky. Still, anyone have a Phaeton? I'm sure the LS would be a much safer option in terms of reliability and maintenance.3ananaPie said:

What could possibly go wrong?http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2014...
Seriously though, if you want a £5k barge which once cost more than a £100k, buy a lot of lube first. Lexus is a good shout simply because they have a reputation for never going wrong. Otherwise, how about a barge version of a mid tier brand...

The steering wheel on that Honda is particularly nasty.
Why do all the Phaetons I've seen seem to have orange wood?
Something looks wrong there. I looks like a dodgy clip on cover you get from Halfords. Aftermarket? Rim looks way to thick too.Why do all the Phaetons I've seen seem to have orange wood?
I like that Honda interior. i even like the wood. But that wheel is wrong.
Jaguar XJ6 - X350 shape. For your budget and requirements I'd ignore the V8 choices and go for the 3.0 V6 - it's more than quick enough and offers marginally better MPG: you can get 35 on a run if you drive sensibly.
Reliability wise, they're not perfect, but buy a good one and you should be OK. Check that the gearbox changes smoothly and that there aren't any knocking noises when going over bumps, as air suspension struts and wishbones are quite expensive. On the subject of air suspension, check that the arch gap is roughly the same all round, and that the car levels correctly when starting up.

It's ghastly but just a Halfords clip on as you say. Easily solved.I like that Honda interior. i even like the wood. But that wheel is wrong.
The Legend above has done 130k but if you can stretch the budget to say £7k, you can halve the miles.
