How would one go about selling a car straight after buying it, i.e. before the V5 has arrived from the DVLA? I came across a bargain advertised locally with a notice in the window and bought it today with a view to getting in on the internet and making some money on it. It would be quite handy to get it sold straight away so it's not cluttering up my driveway for weeks until the V5 has arrived but I'm not too sure about how this works.

If it's not sensible then maybe I'll just use it for pottering around in for a few weeks until the V5 arrives.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Just stick in the advert 'Not got the V5 yet it's in the post m8' wink

I kid. You could sell the car to a buyer and then fill their details out when the V5 does arrive... And Tipp-ex over the yellow slip. Write them a receipt so they've a vested financial interest in the car.

Cool.

So now you're a motor trader

Look up your responsibilities under the soga and mark yourself up as a trade seller. Then give hmrc a ring to register

Before I knew much about cars (I still don't, really), I bought a car off a dodgy trader like yourself. Totally forgot about the V5 until I got home with the car. Remember him writing my details on a piece of paper and saying he would post something to me. It was only when home that the penny dropped - he was dodgy buyer and seller of cars and the paperwork was still at the DVLA.

Anyway, no harm done, the car was ok for the few hundred quid I paid, the paperwork arrived, and I won't make that mistake again.

Sounds like there isn't a great solution then, I would personally be very reluctant to buy a car off someone with no V5. I shall use it to trundle about locally & save wear on my nice car for a few weeks then get it up for sale when I have the V5. Alternatively it would make a good winter car for trundling around in snow if we have any as my proper car would be hopeless.

I'm not a trader, this is the only car I've ever bought with the intention to sell it sooner rather than later. If I came across a boat, a guitar or anything else for that matter up for a price way less than it's true value I would buy it, play with it then sell it on again, just common sense really.
