How can you confirm the service history of the car?

I have the service book but google cant find the garages and the ones I can (two) appear to have been dissolved.

That could possibly point towards a fake history

If they're main dealer stamps, ring the Irish distributor and see what they have electronically for service history. Lot of businesses went under in ROI just as elsewhere when economy went screwy so it's possible it's genuine, but could just be some dodgy stamps made up to look genuine.

A lot of dealerships went bust over here in the last few years or have been absorbed into others

None are dealerships - well one was but not a BMW dealership as this car is. They're mostly indi's / specialists.

The car has been brought back to the UK by an Independant garage in UK. It was originally a UK car.

You might be able to trace the MoT history for it from the previous UK registration, but most likely it will come up as unknown unless it's been re-registered onto the same UK plate already. Only real reason to put fake stamps in a service book is to try and cover up a 'haircut' on the mileage, which MoT history in the UK should show up, or a complete lack of actual maintenance.

End of the day if it smells fishy just find another or if it's cheap enough and drives well and you'll keep it till it dies, don't worry about it but pay accordingly.

OP try www.cartell.ie for a small fee it will tell you absolutely everything about the history of the car and whether there is a discrepancy in mileage, if it was off the road for any amount of time, if it was a UK import etc. Very good site.

Just run a Cartell "2 star" check. All looks OK but theres no mention of write off etc - all it says is "ROADWORTHINESS* - No changes recorded". I presume thats all good too? Also, NCT equivalent to MOT?

Yes, NCT is the Irish equivalent to the MOT, although a little less stringent. They've only lately started recording mileage
