Well we had plenty of mist/fog this morning so we the usual confusion with some cars had no lights, others side or dipped lights but when it comes to fog lights no one seems to have a clue.

In the thick bits of fog, no fog lights but in town they suddenly get switched on so the driver behind has nice bright red lights to stare at even though they are in a traffic jam and can see the car in front. It also used to be that cars only had 1 rear fog light but now they have 2 so they are even brighter. Would being dazzled by rear fog lights be a good enough excuse to be blameless in a rear end shunt?

No, you can hardly claim you missed it.

It's not difficult, but how many people in cars are actually thinking about what they're doing?

It is worthy of repetition, though.

Unthinking idiots need to be told. Maybe there should be a government campaign:

"If you can see the car behind you, TURN YOUR FOG LAMPS OFF!"

"If it is dark, misty or raining, use dipped beam, not side lights!"

"If it isn't foggy, don't use your fog lamps!"

....And then turn your rear fog lamps off.

You don't need them on if there is a Car close behind you who can see you nor if you can see 10 cars ahead on the motorway.

They probably shouldn't be right behind you, but you shouldn't be dazzling them.

It's funny how many PHers complain about these things yet, based on the sheer number of people on the road that commit these sins, I struggle to believe that people posting here aren't also offenders!!!

I think it's very difficult personally.

I use mine all the time and I keep getting angry middle aged men with Pistonheads stickers flashing me and shaking their chubby fists.

I dont know why they are not reset when you turn the car off, meaning they cannot be left on for the next journey.

A good point. My mum had a '92 Toyota Corolla and often knocked the fog-light button with her knee getting in or out the car, causing them to be on without her realising.
