Once our roads had thousands of these cars on them. Not now of course.

Alive, well and in good shape in Cheltenham yesterday :~

Good to see.

Awesome a Metro 1.0 L !
Had loads or Metros back in the day and as crap as they were they had some really good points:

Steering and handling were first rate
Nice big glass area very modern for its time

Just don't mention the rust, lack of 5 th gear and archaic noisy engine! And the rust

Suprized they were still in production as late as 1997, according to wikipedia. Haven't seen one for ages.

I've only ever been in 2. One belonged to a school-mates mum, was dark blue. Remember being very scared sitting in it doing 60mph on the M2 amongst the lorries. The second was a courtesy car my dad had for a couple days while his was in the bodyshop. Was a 1.0 but someone had put the MG bodykit on it. He took me to school in it and I got him to drop me off down the road as it was so embarrassing to be seen in. Evidently I thought they were crap even as a 11 year old!

I had a 1988 Metro GTA as my first car, I would love to have a go in it, although I think it will be long rusted away by now.

Quite fun, hugely unreliable but easy to home fix.

How the roof design with water gutters got passed quality control is beyond me though!

Wasn't it the NCAP crash test of them (in Rover 100 form) that caused them to be taken off sale almost immediately?

love the lack of a pax side wingmirror!

my older mate had one as a first car so it was my first taste of the ability to be independently mobile! Had a separate radio with cassette player bolted underneath and a single speaker in the middle of the dash!! It was puke yellow...

It got a terrible 1 star test I think, but I don't know why they got it tested at that stage of its life - it probably would have been killed off from falling sales anyway.

As stated in the driving test thread I learnt in a Metro GTI 16v. My first toy car was a corgi Metro too, to go with a set of books about a little red metro! They were everywhere in the 80s-90s, and the one in the pic is a very early one. I am not actually massively nostalgic about them though.

Little dangly toy thing at the back - hope it isn't going to get further 'scene' modifications!

Sorry to be a spoil sport but I fecking hate these things.

Cramped, noisy slow, uncomfortable, thirsty for what they are and not good looking..... I can't see the appeal at all.

If you were held up by slow traffic...it was always a Metro.

Quite liked the interior of the first MG ones in the early 80s though.

MG Metro was my first car, silver and those red seatbelts that added 5hp and pepper pot alloys.

First time I went on the motorway there was a big bang at around 65, mate and I had no idea what it was t'ill we got home, the front bumper had come off and had run over it.

Corners were fun but the engine was very rough sounding and didn't like going past 4500rpm . Mine was pretty reliable as well.

Ended up writing it off over an unseen speed bump, the air suspension at the back collapsed. Sold it for £50 then a year later saw it go the other way to me in Thornton Heath.....

Just don't see them anymore so good spot OP!

My Mum had one of the last 1.0 Clubman Metros for years and I drove it all over the country. I think that the lack of a fifth gear was really the only thing I didn't like about it.

If I am brutally honest I preferred it to any classic Mini - just as chuckable, better visibility, truly amazing packaging and the sort of light, airy, practical interior that car manufacturers seem to have completely lost the ability to provide. I even liked the bus-like driving position.
