I'm just cruising down the motorway on a 70mph and then you hear a F****** *bang* from the stone where it somehow bounced from the tyre then onto the passenger side of the car framework(could be arch, door) and it drives me insane to hear that awful noise

No as the sound drives me insane and I want the car to be in mint condition but with these stupid things on the road it fking hurts my pride and joy for the car.

You've two choices.

1. Keep driving and don't worry about driving over stones / uneven surfaces, or closing your doors when the windows are open.

2. Stop driving.

Go with option one, it'll significantly reduce your stress levels.

I once had half a brick bounce off my bonnet. Was wedged between the twin rear wheels of a dump truck until it made it's escape bid. New bonnet needed. Plus near heart attack when I saw it comming !!!!

Alternatively why don't you tell us something about yourself. What car you drive. How long you've been driving. What cars you like. You know, normal stuff for a petrolhead?

Might make the occasional rant about stone chips more palatable...

Considering the amount of de-laminated lorry tyres you find on motorways, I think stones are the least of your worries...

The latter; his user name should be Thrush; irritating little .

Years ago my MKIII Astra broke down (again) and I was recovered by an AA flat bed. We were travelling along a NSL single carriageway with a grab lorry travelling towards us on the other side of the road. We were chatting away when there was an almighty BANG. A brick came through the windscreen and hit the centre seat and bounced onto the floor.

It punched a hole right through the windscreen, no crazing of the screen, just a hole. I assume it was caught between the rear twin tyres and exited at the right moment but to be honest, I never saw it coming.

I say the right moment as there are a number of other trajectories it could have taken with very different results. I wanted to keep the brick as that was a seriously lucky escape but IIRC the AA driver wanted it as proof of how the hole was created.

Could be worse I've had 3 windscreens totally destroyed on the motorway. Maybe think yourself lucky that this was number one.

I wonder how long a stone spends in the motorway bouncing from car to road to car...

I believe it was a large boulder when it started bouncing, it's just been worn down

I agree with the OP, it is a pain, especially of you have a decent car! I've recently spent a fair bit on a respray, pinging stones make me wince, and a stone chip will ruin my day mad, doesn't help they're surface dressing all the roads around here!. However the only way to prevent them is not to drive it, which defeats the object :/
