My first car (a 20yr old Astra mk3) has not been taxed for the past 8 years or so according to the DVLA vehicle check.
It wasn't a special edition or anything that would ever be worth anything at all, even as parts.
So, is there a way that I can ask for the number plate from my first car to be used in future as my 'private plate'?
FWIW it was just a standard number plate, date appropriate to the registration date, it's just the sentimental value.

You'd need to establish who owns the car first. Then you'd need to ask them if they want to sell the car/plate but you'd need the car to have an MOT in order to transfer it.

It could be that the car has been scrapped and the plate 'lost' with it.

If you OWN the car, and it has a current MOT or was taxed in the last 12 months, you can apply to transfer the reg.
Looks like you'll have to fix it and get it an MOT.
