Did a round trip on motorway this morning of about 20 miles- if anything it reached 80 but then back to 70. Does this sound normal?

I think it's a modern Diesel thing, as long as you still have heat coming out the heaters all is well.

I'd suggest your thermostat is sticking partially open.

My Bro has a 2002 T4 and had the same problem, it baffled to garages before he took it to a VAG specialist. I seem to recall it was the thermostat.

It should be bang in the middle at 90 I think. As above, suspect you've got a thermostat switch problem.

I had a Bora with the same engine - the gauge is useless, it is more of a random angle generator than an accurate temp gauge.

I would first suggest changing the temperature sender on the back of the block, sub £10 fix - every decent motor factor will have thousands.

However, all the VAG forums have multiple threads about the diseasel engines running cool - it's really just one of those things. In the winter with my heater blowing mine ran down the A38 at about 70 degrees. no problems really, 'cos it's hot enough to be off whatever the diesel equivalent of choke is.

If the temp sender doesn't fix it, put a sticker over the gauge and carry on regardless. I did 35,000 miles in mine with it running cold - still averaged a lifetime 49mpg.

It's not. It's either the thermostat or the coolant temp sender. Is it quite erratic? Or does it never really reach 90 degrees and then kind of cool down a bit? If you lift off down hill does it cool down some more? On mine it was both....

My Passat used to be nailed at 90 degrees even in the coldest winter. (once the stat and sender were fixed of course)

Yup. Had Passats for 8-9 years now, temp guage is always bang on 90 (straight up basically) once up to speed...

Sounds like a thermostat, it's not uncommon on the 1.9tdis to need them doing at some point.
Very easy fix, lots of guides on line.
Buy thermostat, and a some fluid to top up what you loose when changing... Job done.

Change the thermostat and blue temperature sender and then refill with VAG G12+ coolant.

It'll be hurting mpg as as the engine won't be getting up to it's normal operating temperature.

Does the temperature rise when the car is sat idling?

Basically if the stat is stuck open, the coolant is flowing around the whole cooling system from startup, meaning it is passing through and being cooled by the radiator.

On start up the stat should be closed so that the coolant only circulates the engine, then when it gets to 90c or so, the stat opens and the coolant temperature maintained at that to ensure optimal running.

Mine goes to 90, then doesn't shift no matter what I do.

As others have mentioned, VAG temp senders frequently fail. I would replace this first before bothering with anything else and see if it improves. If not, then it is likely the thermostat as others have also mentioned. The coolant gauge on my B5 RS4 recently started reading low and it was the sender, which took all of about ten minutes to replace.

Interesting.

We have betwee us 3 Tdi's from the VAG stable.

An A4 2003 130bhp, a Golf 2004 90bhp and a 2000 GTTDi 115bhp.

NONE hit 90c on the temp gauge unless in traffic or town driving with ac on full in hot weather. Then none go over 90c, ever.

I have actually replaced the temp gauge on the 90bhp Golf as it went mental, but apart from that all get over 40mpg easy (thats with no motorway crusing) and have heat for the cabin with no issues.

Surely they all cant have the potential same fault as per some are suggesting?

Also we've owned the GTTDI for over 5 years now and its always been this way, the 90bhp Golf about the same and the A4 for over a year now.

It appears to be a VERY common fault.

That's quite low for a VAG diesel!
