Toyota Tundra 'Bass Pro Shops Off-Road Edition'

Launched at the State Fair of Texas, available for good ol' boys and their 'outdoor adventures'

Occasionally a press release is just so wonderfully daft that its subject matter must be featured. We're not usually ones for pick-ups but an exception has to be made for the Toyota Tundra Bass Pro Shops Off-Road Edition.

America. F**k yeah.
America. F**k yeah.
Where to start? It's only available in the Gulf states (Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Oklahoma and Texas) and the Tundra BPS is the first collaboration between Toyota and the nation's 'premier outdoor retailer'. To that end, each customer of this triumph of testosterone will receive 'their choice of a special fishing, hunting, camping and marine outdoor gear lifestyle package' from Bass Pro, worth one thousand of your US bucks. That's real value.

Mechanical spec is identical to a regular Tundra, with a 5.7-litre i-Force V8 packing 381hp and 401lb ft. MPG? 11 using US gallons. CO2? Sounds a bit Communist. But the Bass Pro is also built 'with safety in mind' says Gulf States Toyota. There's probably a gun joke in there somewhere. The Tundra includes a tow package for taking a boat, ATV or UTV (that's a utility task vehicle. We had to look it up as well) and 'top braking technology'.

Y'know, in case it wasn't obvious

As a Bass Pro Shops Off-Road Edition customer you will also have a feast of rare and desirable extras to show off at your next hoedown. Those rims? 20-inch Milled-Matte with All Terrain Upgrade tyres. Yessir. 'Custom' floor mats with that beautiful Bass Pro logo, also seen on the bed decals. And spray-on bedliner for all the heavy duty activities that may take place out back.

The Bass Pro is exclusively available in silver with the 4x4 CrewMax SR5 configuration. Like it or lump it sissy. According to Gulf States Toyota's president Marty Mcf... Collins, the Tundra "has all the capability to take you where you want to go, but you'll look good doing it". After all, pick-up trucks and being outdoors "are a natural way of life" down South.

Built in the U.S. by 2,900 hard-working Americans on the historical JLC Ranch in San Antonio (that's direct from the Toyota press bumf), the Bass Pro costs $43,975. Don't forget that free Bass Pro package gift too. See you at the rodeo.

This all makes perfect sense to an American in the Gulf states. Bass Pro Shops are big sponsor of NASCAR. Toyata have the NASCAR link, and NASCAR in most popular in the Southern States.

I was expecting this to be kitted out with subwoofers - not fishing utensils. Imagine my disappointment... etc etc

You could make four modern cars out of that lot instead of one dinasaur.

You can take the stupid out of car design but not the stupid out of people.

Off-Road, yeah, it says, fair enough.

But how would you know it's a pick-up? There's no stickers for that!?

In a country where Tesla's are becoming rather popular, I love that they still make these things.

11 mpg ..... on a good day! Brilliant.

Thank god (or should that be praise the lord) that somewhere in the world people are still building and buying stuff just because it's cool and they want it, instead of worrying about MPG, parking and badge appeal!

I've no doubt this will be very populat in its intended market... and probably won't stand out as anything much different on the road.

I wonder if the target audience for this thing are sitting around having a good old laugh at UK ads for dull grey hatchbacks with puny 1.0 engines?

Nothing says 'off-road' like an expanse of chromed plastic on the front corners where they'll get scratched to hell in moments.

I reckon a manufacturer who built a proper full size pickup in the UK would clean up. All ours are small crap where you either get crew cab or a full load space but not both usually coupled to a stty little TDi engine. Build it to pass NCAP, offer a rigid cover and a real man's engine and you have the perfect all in one family car.
