Dear all
Just need some advice if you could please. We have sold my wifes car which has a private plate and purchased another. The transfer has happened and the documentation has arrived for us to put the private plate on her new car.The V5 has not arrived for the car we have sold yet because I guess it is being updated with the replacement plate details. Can the new owner come and collect and pay for the car without the V5 as long as I ensure he signs a receipt with date & time.Assuming he is happy of course.

I should point out that we intended transferring the plate before selling the car.We put the car up for sale and filled out the transfer docs thinking it would maybe take a week to ten days to sell it by which time the documents would be back.We took a deposit on it within 24hrs of advertising it getmecoatsilly

That's going to be the gotcha. What would YOUR reaction be if you bought a car only to find, when you went to collect it, that the vendor came up with some excuse as to why there was no V5C...?

I agree but the buyer has been down and seen the original documents and all the service history etc.In addition the car is going back on the original plates documented in the main dealer service history.

As has been said, it's all down to what the buyer wants. I'd be very uncomfortable buying a car other then from the home address of someone who can show me a V5 with their details and the car details shown accurately. Others may be more relaxed.

Thanks all for your comments I will inform the buyer obviously and let him make the decision. As I said he did see the V5 at our home before it went off to DVLA. Also we have the documents from DVLA with the new tax disc and as the car has reverted to its original plate we have lots of history relating to this plate.

Thanks again

You should have printed a colour copy of the V5 and MOT to give the buyer a bit more confidence when picking up the car. I've done this a few times.
