This all may sound a bit fantastic to people who distrust other people that exploit the status quo.
Have run 2 citroen diesels for 7 years and have paid around 8 pounds less for my fuel every time I fill up. How?
When I fill up, from empty, a proportion of the fuel I put in the tank is vegetable oil bought from Tescos. The ratio is 33% vegetable oil, 66% diesel fuel. Tesco sell v/oil - 10 litres for 8 pounds. That is 80p a litre. In general I divide it up into 15 litres of v/oil and 30 litres of diesel. (33% and 66%).
This means that 15 litres of v/oil have cost me 12 pounds. If you multiply the current price of 15 litres of diesel fuel by 135.5, this is 20.32, therefore saving me 8.32. EVERY TIME I FILL UP.
The catch?. There aren't any. It IS legal. I have NEVER done anything to the cars, no adjustments, no tweaking of anything, it does NOT smell of chips or anything at all. It does NOT smoke. I do around 8000 miles a year and other than changing the fuel filter every year, I have not done a thing to any of the mechanical parts. I DO drive sedately everywhere I go, so nothing is ever over-stressed. This fuel saving mod has NO effect whatsoever on fuel consumption. The car runs exactly the same as one not using v/oil. I do run the car for a week on diesel only before an MOT to ensure the correct emissions.
No doubt I will get know-alls telling me various horror stories regarding what I'm doing, but saving around 100 or so pounds on my fuel bill every year remains appealing, and 8 years of doing it has proved economical. Using ex-chip shop oil and all that filtering and mess didn't appeal to me.
I also get between 65 and 75 MPG consistently owing to my considerate, (for the car), driving.

What model citroens are they old fashioned or newer turbo diesels?
I wouldn't want to try this with a fancy new diesel (like my 325d) but interesting to hear it works for you.

It's not particularly new. However, as far as I know, modern common rail diesels don't really like veg oil over the longer term. Not sure why, but it's probably to do with slight differences in viscosity, or something along those lines.

A valid approach if you run an older diesel, however if you cream cracker the HP pump and injectors on a more modern one, then that £100 saving is going to look pretty small all of a sudden!

My citroen is a 1.4 turbo diesel. The same engine that is currently in most peugeot/citroen cars in production

Don't exaggerate, it happened in 2003 so he's only 11 years behind...

Cheers Mate, thanks to people like you I now pay double for veg oil to use in my fryers, costing me an extra £1000 pa.

So at £8 per tank over a year travelling 8,000 miles p.a., assuming you would use 16 tanks of fuel per year, you save approx £130 per annum. Fuel filters ordinarily wouldn't need changing every 8k so assuming you also do that yourself then that's £30-40 depending on where you get your filters, plus the hassle of changing it.

Is it really worth it to save £10 a month? You could ask your boss for £10 payrise and he'll probably say yes.

I ran my old ZX on 90% oil, 6 years ago, I used free, used oil, that was filtered, and cleaned.

My memory on this is a bit vague but aren't you meant to declare the use of the oil as fuel and pay duty on it ?

No-one does of course.

IIRC, you only declare after using 3500 litres per year, below that, they don't care.

The cut-off nowadays is something like 2000l p.a. wink .

HMRC website will no doubt reveal all.

My bro runs 100% veg oil in summer and gets it cheap from Cosco in his Toyota Hilux Surf. Believe in winter it's more like 70% veg 30% diesel as it thickens up too much due to cold weather. He's done road trips to Europe without issue so seems to be fine.

I have followed him whilst running it and it smells like burning candles/fish and chip shop.
