I didn't know this.

A multi-million pound contract has been awarded to a French company to bring in a quicker system for using the Dartford Crossing.

Sanef will be responsible for operating a free-flow charging system, which is due to come into operation in October next year.

It will mean drivers will not have to stop at barriers to pay the charge, but make payments over the phone, online or by text.

The step forward for the system, designed to free up congestion at the crossing, was announced today.

The £367million contract with Sanef - to design and deliver the new system - is a seven-year deal and includes the opportunity to extend up to a further three years.

Roads minister Stephen Hammond said: "I welcome this contract award which shows the government delivering on its promise to provide improvements that will help traffic flow better at this crucial gateway.

"This will help thousands of drivers who use the crossing every day, and benefit both the local and national economy."

So would making it free like they promised

Nigel Gray, Highways Agency project manager, said: "We are introducing new technology and road layout changes to change the way drivers pay to use the crossing.

"Once it is fully implemented drivers will not have to stop at the barriers, but will pay for their journey remotely.

"This will reduce congestion and ease traffic flow. The contract covers the development as well as the ongoing operation of the new payment system.

"We remain on track to deliver this improvement in October 2014."

So that's all right then

Leaving aside the charging issue, the method will be superb. Works really well in Ireland.

Now what would be nice is if all of the major toll routes, such as Humber Bridge, and the M4 bridge to Wales could sort themselves out so they can all work this way and on a single account.

I suspect that this may be a pipe dream, judging how long it took for them to accept cards.....

I've got a good idea, just remove the tolls like they promised once the bridge was paid for. No congestion and no costs or contracts. No brown envelopes or seats on the board either though I suppose.

Idiot question... when they say its a £367million contract, who's paying the £367m? Sanef or us?

Apparently it's no longer a toll....

Toll charges were collected at the crossing until 2003 when the cost for constructing the QEII Bridge and the tunnels had been fully re-paid. A road user charge was introduced in 2003 to manage the high demand for use of the Crossing. Parliament agreed the powers for the charging regime in the Transport Act 2000.

They don't make brown envelopes big enough.

Sanef charged me a fortune for my tolls this year. A £90 direct debit was taken for what I would consider "light" usage compared to usual years at half the cost. Bloody French.

Surely the French have no need to interfere with this. The UK gov could manage it via the HA. Or am I being silly¿

They have.
Sorry if you missed the memo, but there is no Dartford toll.
I know you still have to stop at a barrier and toss money in a bucket or pay the nice lady or buy a tag in advance, but you're not paying a toll but paying a charge.
It's completely 100% different you see.

Pretty certain they have been awarded the contract to run the tolls for the upcoming "Mersey Gateway" along with Samsung to build the thing!

£52million per year?

What exactly does this buy? It's certainly not going to cost that to run some electronic toll booths.

Old story by about a year.

Sanef are 52% owned by Abertis who are Spanish.

Abertis also own 25% of RMG (a consortium of AMEC, McAlpine, Brown and Root and Dragados)

Abertis are already here. http://www.abertis.com/europe/var/lang/en/idm/337

Do I believe the crossing charge should be abolished? Absolutely.
