High oil usage

I have a colleague at work who's recentley replaced the engine in a vw polo.

The new engine is drinking oil 3/4 litre in 300 miles, to me this sounds high but I've never owned a vw so maybe its normal for the mark?

Its the 3 cylinder single cam 1200cc engine.

It's either leaking or burning. Sounds far too excessive though.

That was what I thought , he says its not smoking even when cold and nothings dripping onto the drive.

I understand some cars are known to use oil such as alfas but 1 litre per thousand miles is more like the rate of consumption.
