I've never bought a used car in the uk that didn't require some work pretty much immediately. At this price, am I being too optimistic hoping to find something that doesn't need anything?
It's only for a bit of fun on a Sunday and I don't want to put time into fixing it as I'm no mechanic.

Lexus IS200. Underpowered and thirsty, but 6 cylinder and RWD.

Focus ST170. Will probably need minor work to suspension etc, but IME, Focuseseses have been pretty reliable.

Not sure if they're in budget or how trouble free they are, but a Honda Accord Type-r may be worth a look.

Early Audi S3s are in that kind of price range now. 1.8t, 210-225 BHP, 4WD quattro system and well put together and generally reliable cars. Definitely fits the bill of 'mildly' interesting.

MR2 Roadster should be doable in budget. A lot more resistant to rust than the MX-5!

I'll suggest a V6 GTV too.

What bout a Fiat Coupé?

I bought a nice 172 Cup for little more than that last year. Bit more minimalist than the 182, but arguably more fun.

For sheer entertainment I'd probably go with the original MX5 suggestion, but you'll be towards the top end of that budget for one that's truly rust-free. I looked at the best part of a dozen (mostly early mk2 1.8i S) before buying the Clio on impulse and only one of them was free from tin-worm.

ETA I'd echo the Porsche suggestion too. I'd go for a 924S at that budget - mechanically almost identical to the basic 944 but much better value for money due to the stigma (somewhat unfairly) attached to the base model 924.
