Hi all,

Just got a small problem that i was hoping that somebody could help me with. I have recently sold my cherished plate and after sending the documents off (MOT cert and v5 etc) i also sold the car, the buyer wasn't worried that i didn't have the V5 as he understood the the situation and we signed an agreement that said in the absence of the V5 he is the legal owner (as the DVLA advised me to do) however, this is where the problem lies. The tax of the vehicle runs out tomorrow and the owner is asking how to tax it without the V5 etc, the reference number on the reminder does not work (guessing its now mid process with plate changes) and i am stumped just what to say to the buyer?

Does anybody have any ideas?

Thanks for any responses

Without meaning to sound like a dick, if you're no longer the owner it isn't your problem. Tell him to ring the DVLA and ask them himself.

Under the new road tax regs coming in on the 1st Oct he'd have to tax it anyway when he puts the V5 into his name.

No idea how the new system will work, I assume you have to send the cost of the tax off with the transfer paperwork?

That was my first response, but the DVLA have said that they can only speak to the owner on the document which is me, so when i phoned and said i have sold the car they said (you guessed it) 'we need to speak to the new owner' unless i just got an awkward operator neither him or me can speak about the car haha

Did you keep the "new keeper" slip for him, or send that back with the rest of the V5C?

I sent the whole form back, it was done through British car Regs and they took ages to do anything about it but that was before i had decided to sell the car, it was only like 2 weeks after sending the stuff off that i put it up for sale.

When I bought the Jag from a dealer he didn't have the V5 and forgot to mention the reason was that it was having a cherished plate transferred. It took 4 weeks to get he V5 through before I could tax it. No way around it I was told.

So, nope, nothing to be done.

If he'd got the new keeper slip, he could tax it at a PO (but it'd still be taxed under the old plate).
If there was no change of keeper, you could tax it with a V62.

But the combo? Nope, it's a sit-back-and-wait job.

Looking at the car tax website all you need is the 12 digit number on the V5C/2 (new keeper supplement) - no mention of the MOT. I assume it checks that in the background now it's all computerised
