Constantly we're being told it's VED(vehicle excise duty), but tonight I went on line and paid the toll to keep my car on the road ,legally. I then got an email to confirm payment.

Confirmation of vehicle tax.

Thank you for using DVLA Vehicle Licensing Online.
Your application for vehicle tax has been successful.

So - is it VED, or vehicle Tax.

excise duty is a form of tax, so in this context either could be used
looks very much like the government have taken the opportunity to start referring to it as simply tax rather than excise duty, this does not change anything, I don't believe it is based on any actual legislation changes.

this issue was never over it being referred to as vehicle or car tax, but road tax, or road fund license, as it is a tax on active vehicle ownership rather than road use.

It's doubtful that a Government Agency would be aware of all the recent changes - after all it's only been VED since 1937.

Duty, tax, same thing isn't it? Where does the 'road' bit come from?

It's a tax based on your vehicle's CO2 emission. It is NOT road tax; the hypothacated link to roads was removed in 1931 and the name changed to Vehicle Excise Duty (tax) in 1937. The goverment is calling it vehicle tax to remove the 'road tax' mindset. Cyclists are often urged to 'pay some road tax'; a feat that is currently impossible.

It's now all a bit academic. The London Congestion Charge is an environmental charge because it has sod all to do with congestion. Were it based around congestion then it would be charged on size/weight rather than emissions. I digress.

For a subset of one particular type of motor vehicle, perhaps.

My V11 Reminder mentions "vehicle tax" multiple times. No mention of road tax or VED.

If you call it road tax, you are implying that you pay for the road. Which is horse st.

All you are doing is paying an arbitrary tax for using your vehicle.

The reason this is important is because some idiots think they have more right to use the road if they pay for VED than people whose vehicles not need to pay.

i dont want to derail the thread but thought i'd ask here rather than starting a new post.

if i buy a car today (going to see it later) will i still get the remainder of the tax? or will i have to apply to this new system?
