I've recently sold a couple of vehicles. One was sorned and not insured. The other was taxed and insured. I called to cancel the insurance and was told the cancellation charge meant I would get no refund. Fair enough. I was also told to post the certificate back, but I can't find it. Given the fact that there's nothing in it for me, I'm not inclined to spend a lot of time looking for it.

Will this bite me in the arse, or should I relax with a beer?

Cheers! Somehow (iPhone) I've started two posts on this, and both have been replied to. Christ knows how to go about sorting that out.

If the new buyer doesn't get insurance and drives uninsured, and your policy is still valid and the car is on the MID as being covered by your policy, then when he has an accident, you're going to be in for a whole load of grief.

Yes, but I've cancelled my policy. The chap on the phone said it was cancelled, I could whistle for any refund and I should send the certificate back. Ergo, as far as I'm aware, my policy is cancelled.

Legal requirement to return the certificate of insurance, however write or email to them to state this fact.
It's not really a huge problem these days but write to them just to explain rather than ignore it.

If it's lost it's lost nothing can be done about that.

Most insurance companies will let you declare the certificate as destroyed.

Is the actual paper certificate worth anything these days?

Back in the day when you had to present it at the Police station when you got a producer it made more sense to insist that you returned it, but these days don't the Police and anyone else who wants to know just check online?

I've never sent a cert back, and never had an issue.

This. Email or letter to confirm destruction
