This could be a scam akin to the one on here I read about where some travellers tie 2 dogs together with a view to jumping out and bumming unsuspecting passersby (if you haven't read the thread you haven't lived).

Some very persistent knocking on my door resulted in me being greeted by some of our travelling friends with a bit of the old banter and asking me if I could move my car all of 4 feet so they could finish turning their van in our cul de sac. No probs, car moved but my car was nowhere near their turning circle and vans (for some reason they love it down here) have never had a problem turning on this road.

Now the cars nice enough but not super duper (C55 AMG merc estate) which they now know where the keys live and I'm wondering if by opening and closing the door with the clicker could they have cloned (or whatever the term is) the code to open the car? Sorry about the paranoia but the encounter has me flumoxed. To illiterate, the moving of my car did not facilitate the turning manouver in anyway? What's the deal, also I have an attractive dog, should I fit her with a chastity belt?

More likely they wanted to have an excuse ready in case you answered the door.

No doubt if nobody had answered, they'd let themselves in.

Perhaps they wanted to see where you kept your car keys?

Maybe they thought you needed clothes pegs or your palm read.

OTOH probably sizing up the house to rob or scam the home owner if elderly(mend roof tar drive etc). Keep your keys well out of sight when at home.

Can you park it anywhere else for a couple of days?. Or garage it?

Did they all come to the door?, do you keep your rear door locked? Could have been a distraction burglary attempt

Many years ago when I lived with my parents, we had some travellers knock and offer to do the drive. When they were told no thanks, they hung around for a few minutes talking between themselves (door closed at this point).

That night our 18ft caravan was lifted over a 1ft wall and never seen again.

The conversation tonight was an excuse, be on gaurd.

Could well have been casing the joint, but at least they've learnt we have an angry (sounding) dog and keep our doors locked as I unbolted to answer the door.

I don't want to start leaving the car elsewhere as who knows when they'll be back and much as I love the car, it's only stuff and it's insured but yes it's left me feeling a bit uneasy, feel like I want to be proactive but can't really do much.

On the plus side (the minus being the existence of so many scum bags) my folks were broken into last week, police were good, took fingers prints which match a known local offender. I'll be twitching the curtains tonight (no euphemism smile)

Distraction is their favourite trick, I had a similar thing happen, knock at the door by a pie key. He was asking directions which seemed odd as I knew he was local, had definitely seen him about before from time to time in his tranny. Something was clearly not right so I closed the door behind me and started to walk down the side of my house where his friend/brother was caught with his face pressed against the drivers side window glass of my Cayman!

Apparently he'd lost his dog..... they do loose a lot of dogs....

Keep your keys well away from your letter box. If you can't garage your car put a cover over it or block it in on the driveway with something less theft worthy if you have it. There was a spate of thefts around where I live where a gang from Liverpool were stealing premium brand cars and high performance cars. The police caught them with a stolen Focus ST from my estate that they'd used as a getaway car after a bank job or something like that. People were woken up by the thieves sticking wires through their letter boxes to either hook keys off hall tables or turn keys in the inside locks of the doors to open them. Some cars were stolen without the keys either through key cloning or electronic devices the thieves had to override security systems.

Get yourself a couple of cheap dogs and some rope. They don't like their own tricks used on them...

This. They always have an excuse ready. If you found one in your bedroom he'd be looking for his budgie he saw fly in your window.

You want to get a 8 inch sheet of wood and nail a 6 inch nail through the middle of it and leave it on your drivers seat overnight for the next few days!!!
In the dark they may not notice it!!!eek

If you're skinny and small then they may well try and take it in the next few days.
