Who is 320d man or A4 TDI man or Mercedes CDI 200 man?

They seem to come in for a fair bit of stick, are they the new Sierra / mondeo man?

Minded man not really an insult. I think 320d man is though, it implies snobbishness in buying a German badge but only being able to afford the sttiest one.

Isn't it about being a company car man? Someone driving a German diesel tens of thousands of miles a year at well over the speed limit 6 inches from the car in front on their way to their next management seminar or sales meeting? Another one of lifes stereotypes

I'm not a salesman (must get that one in) although I have one as a company car. It's a great car for what it is, miles better than the competion and it gets a lot of unfair comments from people who either can't afford one or don't have a job that gives them a new BMW every few years.
That said I also have an S2000 and wouldn't what the BM to be the only car I drive.

In my experience it's down to the company a lot of the time..

Our company car list has base-spec Insignias and Passats, and top-spec Meganes and Scenics (wtf)..

Being German, everyone goes for the Vauxhall / VW and the company do push them on people, apparently they care more about the badge than the spec, I don't know why they want to maintain a stereotype of German saloon driving sales reps and middle managers...

I was blinkered a few months back and determined to get an e46 320d as my next car. Then I sat in one. Comfortable yes, but you don't get much for your money.

Then I decided a CDTi Civic was much more sensible for a family car.

Until I spotted how cheap you can pick up a Lexus is220d at circa 100k miles. Are they about to implode? Just a bit more interesting than the civic.

Trying not to hijack the thread...

This place is a real paradox. People seem to spend a great deal of their time telling us all how German cars aren't any different from other cars and shouldn't be treated differently, yet they don't spend any time telling us that French or Japanese or Italian cars aren't any different from anything else, thereby treating German cars differently, which was the one thing they spent their time telling us not to do.

A 320d is as much the same as an Astra TDi as a Megane dCi, yet if you come across Astra man in your Beemer, he'll feel the need to point this out, whereas if you come across him in your Renault, he will not. Remember at school when your teacher told you that the kids who went on about sex all the time probably weren't getting any, well this is the same. The more keen people are to tell you that your BMW is no better than their Astra (or whatever), the more they secretly think that the Beemer IS better than their Astra.

Personally, I couldn't say, because I drive a Jaguar, which really is better than an Astra (but I can't find the smilies, so you'll have to insert your own).

Simon.

It's funny how you make yourself sound like the image obsessed, snobbish one.

If I needed an economical, comfortable car with good performance(60mph in mid/high 7s and near 150mph top speed) I would test drive a 320d.

Easy tiger! You are safe; the 318d M sport is the schlepper.

Then you have the 1Series range....

Anyone who thinks that a 320d or similar A4 or C Class is to be derided is clearly a bit of a bell end. All are excellent cars and very good at their intended purpose. Only in the UK would such negative perceptions exist because Brits are obsessed with finding ways to pull other people down regardless of the facts.

This. The BMWs tend to be very good on company car tax too, which is a big factor for most people. I had the a Merc c200 cdi a few years back and it was perfect for lots of miles, I now have a Volvo v60 d4 business edition - because it is very cheap on tax and great for long journeys.

It's the Audi a3 drivers you need to watch out for...... wink
