I've come to the decision that it's time to wave goodbye to my 987 Boxster. It's been two great years of balance, steering feel and that flat 6 roaring away behind the ears. For the money I don't think a great deal can beat it and it still somehow turns heads.

It's got to go though - it's a manual and the other half can only drive an auto. Coupled with a new found cycling habit I also need something a bit roomier and an extra two seats wouldn't go a miss for when friends and family are staying (in the past I have had to hire cars!).

It's not easy finding a replacement though. I think it's worth around 10-11k and I'm happy to put another 10 in and buy privately or go down the leasing route.

So far I've tried a 430d and a Golf R. Both pretty different but equally have their merits. I like the comfort of the 4 and it's thrust, the golf for its rorty turbo'd 4 coupled with the dsg. The problem is, they're both very capable but...dull? I need something at is going to get the senses stirring and I worry I'll bore quickly of both. I don't do mega distances (bar a 3k mile schlep round france this summer) so economy isn't the be all and end all but I'd prefer to be without road tax at 465 pa on the Porsche!

A shameless plug but if anyone is in the market for a 987 with carrera s II 19s and nav give me a shout!

Thanks all

E39 M5. Not that I'm biased. Paid my tax a couple of months ago.. £285/year. You soon pay the tax back at the pumps though.

Something Alpina flavoured if an autobox is a necessity?

How about a Cayenne? Plenty of space for the bikes I'd imagine. Never driven one though.

E92 M3

The golf is dull, and you can't go from a Porsche to a diesel.

You can buy a bike rack that fixes to the boot (I had one).

I know what you mean about the golf being dull - I felt the same about my previous M135i - very capable but didn't put a smile on my face when pushing on.

What about the new subaru wrx sti? I almost took the plunge on one but wasn't prepared to spend £500 on tax alone. Or there's the astra/insignia vxr?

Think a lot of my preferences point to an e90 m3. Read a few comments that they lack low down punch though? The Subaru/vaux feel a bit like white goods to me!

The C63 might be worth considering too. Arguably more of an event than the M3 even if it's not quite as capable in the handling department. They're also all automatics, which might make it easier to find what you want.

Keep the Boxster if you like it and get something like an old 5 grand 325d auto estate or merc equivalent for the other half and for lugging people and luggage around. Get a multicar policy and your laughing.
Most modern cars are rubbish and heavily compromised in the looks and engineering department due to environmental, lowest pcp rates so cheapest to build, crap engines .Once you get over the shiny paintwork there isn't much else there. Obviously there are still some good cars like new Porsches etc but again they are impractical and are expensive toys. However used anyone can keep a couple of old cars. Probably best as you can lay one up and fix it cheap while you drive the other one when something goes wrong.

The M3 is just fine. It's not a turbo, so sure, it doesn't have the low down torque, but it more than makes up for it when you're on it. Besides, it's hardly a 1.6ltr Focus.

The STi is anything but white goods wink

Agreed, a reasonable amount of room in the back and boot, but not too large - fuel costs might be a bit of an eye opener though, and it's still in the tax bracket o' doom.

But that engine, party

In your situation I'd keep the Boxster and get a shed. smile

Or if your partner wants to drive it, Sell the Boxster, get a 987 w/PDK and buy a shed. wink

The engine in both are stonking... The AMG sounds better, at least lower down and has a much broader spread of torque. The M car on the other hand really needs to be opened up to be appreciated. For daily driving therefore, the AMG will probably put more smiles on your face.

The tax is small beer compared to the fuel costs of any of these cars, unless you really are doing hardly any miles in it.
