Just noticed the misses new car has metal plates and mine are too when the dealer changed the plates over for private plate.
Not seen metal plates for years so to have 2 cars this year changed I guess a new law?

Nope, not a new law. Dealer choice I guess. Are they still reflective etc?

Both cars from Stratstone so very legal. Must be their new rule as plastic before on previous cars.

Our Discoverys in work came with them, and when the dealer supplied the personal plates they were to. They're just aluminium backed with reflective fronts, not pressed ones. So they look just the same as normal plates. Don't know what the advantage is of them.

Never heard of those before

I guess being metal they don't break down on the plastic film

There's only one advantage a dealer'll care about. And that's price.

Don't agree.
My dealer sold the car with metal plates and plastic plates over them with the original number on it.
Waited a week for the paper work to come through then pulled them off.
If they were cheaper I would have 2 sets.

This will be the product: http://www.hillsnumberplates.com/products/metatek

The dealer probably gets the plates pre-made by Hills rather than making up a set themselves. Hill's pre-made are now only available alu backed. If you have a set of acrylics as well the dealer probably made those on-site.

Just noticed the wife's new company / lease car has metal backed plates. Weird!

Will be interested to see in a few years time if these are significantly better - some acrylic plates are utterly shocking (although some are far better quality than others and last a lot longer)

Anyone know what the dealers will be paying for these? I currently get standard plastic ones for £10 a pair

I guess your dealer may have already had the plastic plates and used these to cover 'your' plate.

Looks like the aluminium is just somewhere to stick the screen printed part.

I suppose future dealers can just stick a new screen print over with their own logo rather than make new plates, again same when allocating private plate, just order a new screen printed part to stick over.

What's to stop someone just sticking the screen printed part directly to a flat surface on the car - stick on bonnet plates again?
