I'm looking for a smallish car - fiesta sized, budget 8k. Preferably petrol. Performance isn't priority, it'll be a second car.

Has to have a decent auto box, a manual isn't an option. So what has a decent box rather than old tech slushboxes?

Slushbox would be my choice over the usual single-clutch box at this price/size category!

Seems to be the only reasonable choice. However SWMBO has decided the Skoda Citigo sounds really nice because it has really cheap tax. The fact the box appears dire seems to pass her by.....

Swift 1.5 drives nicely with a good old fashioned 4 speed auto, nothing fancy but it works and it's reliable and cheap. avoid small engined dsg if you are doing lots of stop start driving they can be quite jerky and it soon gets annoying.

Is the Fiesta with the DCT Power shift in his price range?

If not then as above Polo/Fabia with dsg.

And she'll save a paltry what, £80 or something due to lower tax? It's peanuts compared to the running costs of even a small car. Sorry, but it just amazes me how people get drawn to that low/zero tax thing, like it matters.

Yes we have the 1.0 Ecoboost (100ps) with the Powershift. Happy with the car.

EDIT: sorry just noticed budget is £8k which will rule out the Ecoboost auto.

I've heard good reports about the Hyundai i10. An elderly relative of mine just bought an ex motability car, she loves it.

MINI One - your budget will get you into a nice 2nd Gen R56 which has a much better gearbox than the CVT in the 1st Gen.

Lots of cars about with not many miles on too.

I drove a Fiesta Titanium with an auto box in Jersey. It was really nice, really good box. My brother in law now has one as his first car. It's really nice, the autobox is quite smooth (compares very well with the ZF unit in my wifes BMW). Plenty about within your budget. FWIW the dual-clutch gearboxes require servicing every 30,000 miles (oil changes). A more traditional auto (torque-converter) would like a service every 80,000 (ZF have told me fluid and filter changes for my wifes BMW auto box every 60,000-80,000 miles).

I know its unsporting to actually conclude a what car threadsmile

Skoda Citigo it is, and a manual, not an auto. Ooh the clutch is really light and its easy to park. And she won't die because its small, it has airbags.

So thanks for the advice which was completely ignored...........
