anyone up to speed on which tracker is 'best' / best value for money etc don't know anything about them - there are different brands, and some work on vhf, some gps, some ....? So what's the low-down? This for a london based nickable car, in the 30 grand range. So price has to be reasonable to a person on a normal wage iykwim.

I wouldn't bother unless you can't get insurance without it.

Do you need a insurance approved actively monitored professionally fitted system or a DIY job?

The basic insurance approved systems are below all about £300 fitted and £399 for 3 years of subs. All of them apart from Tracker Monitor are GPS+GSM. Monitor is GPS+UHF and requires the local plod to have suitability equipped traffic cars to locate.
Tracker Monitor or Locate
Cobra Plus
ScorpionTrack ST50
SmarTrack Protector Pro
Trackstar TM450

Not required for insurance. Just ideally to get a car back if it is nicked these days after they break into your house and nick the keys.

I opted for this

http://www.mtrackonline.co.uk

It's battery operated and therefore doesn't need to be hard wired and therefore, can be hidden in a place where conventional trackers can not normally be located. Most thieves will now where a hard wired tracker will be located. Also if you change car, you can easily move the tracker to your new vehicle yourself.
