I don't know why people think it's acceptable but on my four-mile commute, I probably on average see about four cars shoot red lights. On a given amber to red transition, it's more common to see someone drive through the red light than not and it's often more than one car.

I even had someone flash their lights and make annoyed gestures at me for stopping at an amber light this morning.

It's funny how often you can tell when the light goes amber just as you pass it that the car behind is going to press on through.

Where I live in north london there is a crossroads (it's near broomfield park at the top of aldermans hill in Palmers Green).

People jump the lights regularly here. A couple of years ago I rolled up to one of the set of traffic lights, and oppoosite me was a mini with its front end removed. A vehicle had jumped the lights and removed the front end of the mini, engine, wheels, everything.

I always wait a moment before going now. I dont want to die.

I've accidentally done this in an unfamiliar area where theres loads of sets of lights one after another. Mistakenly seen green on the set ahead and missed that my set were red.

I see it loads in my local area where the filter lights to turn right go green and a few cars set off through the straight ahead set on red. Sometimes they realise and stop, sometimes they drive off oblivious and probably wondering why no one else is following.

Seems to happen more often as lights change though rather than when they static.

I'd like to see some of the resource that's given to speeding diverted onto catching red light jumpers. The amount of people I see driving through them and blocking particular junctions is frightening.

Seems to just be the general standard of driving these days. I see stuff now on almost every outing that makes my hair curl.

This. Always occasionally noticed folk pass red lights accidentally, nowadays seems most sets of lights I'll see the usual "amber gamblers" and then one or two folk cutting through on the reds. To me this is far more likely to cause an accident than simply driving a bit over the speed limit, I'd much rather see red light cameras installed on traffic lights than yet more speed cameras.

Had someone the other day drive around me in the right hand turn only lane to proceed straight through a red light after I had the audacity to stop at it laugh

I am behind a car at a red light...the light turns green and the car in front of me doesn't move, so I sound the horn.
Now, in most cases - the car in front will then simply move on...but there have been occasions where the driver in front of
me would get irritated and give me the finger. How is it my fault? fking idiot! ranting

Yep, the guy BEHIND me tested his abs last week as he assumed I was going to go through on amber (and by inference he was perfectly happy to go on red)

The end of the road is controlled by traffic lights to an industrial estate, for some reason there is a horrific delay between each controlled point (4-point crossroad) and every day at around 4:55pm it is chaos with traffic congestion.

I'm not ashamed to admit that I have -
Gone over a reddish-green light
Used the wrong lane and taken a wide turn instead (without cutting anyone up)

However I would never condone this or do it on any fast-moving junctions / roundabouts. But I have justified this in my own head as being 'OK' as it's a good 15-20s before the next set of vehicles start to move, by which time you are long gone!

He did half a job didn't he. If he had been dedicated he could've done the next red light too and been half way home.

If the Cops in SE London have a gap in their prosecution quota, I suggest they just sit at the Fiveways junction on the A20 coming into town. On the basis that the lights go red every 3 minutes or so and I typically see at least 2 cars going through on red, in the space of an hour they could have written about 40 tickets I guess. Some of them could double up for doing well of the 40mph posted limit at the same time. There's a Burger King there too to keep themselves topped up in the calorie department

I see this everyday going into and out of Liverpool city centre, here red lights and box junctions are thought of as optional for commuters. What puzzles me the most is during the usual 5pm gridlock, is particular junctions tend to get bogged down and rather than wait at the stop line when the lights go to amber some idiots will make every effort possible to maintain their place in a queue and will happily sit there blocking an entire junction. Once the lights go through a complete phase quite often they would've joined the queue exactly where they left it. There is a police station just around the corner from one of the worst roads for this behaviour and I often see both normal police and traffic police either just observe the madness or even participate.

Theyre I'n a rush is the reason they do it.

Late to pick up kids, late for work, late for job interview, rushing to get somewhere.

Thats the answer really, not much more to say. Its not ideal and not good driving but thats why they do it.
