don't know if anything good will come of it, but as the DVLA/Government stand to rake in a few extra million a year (despite them playing the figures down), it has to be worth a shot.
I'm sure you're all aware that if you sell a car now, you only get the full months tax back, but when you buy a car, you are liable to pay the tax from the start of the month, thus, that car will have VED paid for twice for that month.
Nothing to lose and it will affect most of us who buy and sell a second hand car http://epetitions.direct.gov.uk/petitions/70232

It's our money at the end of the day and they have done very little to publicise this fact and most people would have been blissfully unaware of it if it wasn't for the AA publicly highlighting it last week.

It might collectively help if everyone used the same e-petition, rather than the several that have been posted on here just today.

The petition states the problem, but doesn't propose a solution, like 90% of the petitions proposed on that site. Fix this and I'll sign it.

yes, and as all e-petitions have to be approved, it would make sense for them to only approve one if the goal is the same.

(by the way, this one is nothing to do with me, just sharing another one!!)

Everyone has their own idea's on a solution. Simple one from me is that if a vehicle is already taxed, the new buyer should not be liable until the first day of the next month as it will remain showing as taxed until then anyway.

I do not agree with it, and I would rather there was a petition to scrap the tax altogether and recover that revenue by adding tax on fuel. Easier, and visitors to the UK pay the tax too.

My daily does about 4000 mile a year, my works caddy van does 40k a year. Why should both vehicles be charged the same VED?

I suggested a solution in one of the myriad other threads. If a car is sold in a calendar month the existing VED should run to the end of that month. No issue incurred as the worst case scenario if the car is being used legally is the default position anyway.

No more difficult to implement than the system they decided to impose (except in the financial gain in favour of the public that is).

if this happened and the DVLA/government were then raking in a few million less each year, they'll just have to recover that lost money through some other tax anyway

well, it's money they haven't yet raked in, so that can't recover what they never had!

just think it stinks when they have played the figures down on how much extra this will bring them in.

What does it matter? It's public kitty money anyway. It's hardly like it's going to materially affect the extreme majority of car owners in any meaningful way.

A fiver or so for the average driver, once every two or three years. Actually, not even that - since only about 35% of used car keeper changes involved taxed vehicles, according to DVLA figures released in the run up to this. So, on average, probably less than a quid per driver per year.

multiply that by every private car sale in the UK over a 12 month period then you get something which is not an insignificant amount of money.

Great. Fore a petrolhead like me who changes car fairly often and tends to like cars with a comparatively high power output, it's another £40 or more a year.

it's not changed the previous situation over refunds of VED one bit, the difference is the lack of transferability.

Not read the whole thread.

Consider this if anyone is really concerned about the slight additional cost.

Buy the taxed used car on the final day of the month and immediately put it on SORN the same day. Collect it and VED Tax it next day... the first of the month. Previous owner will still get the refund for all the unexpired VED months as no refund for the current month as part used anyway even if first day of the month.

To be absolutely fair, refunds and charges should operate on a strictly pro-rata basis 365 days a year basis. Should not be difficult to programme a data base to accommodate that.

I heard someone say it will be possible to pay the VED on a piecemeal basis. That is one month or more at a time plus a small charge ... is this the case?

If I've not got the full picture of the way refunds and charges work under the recently introduced new system, please feel free to pick holes in any of the above. That way I and others can learn.

That's a stload of effort for what used to be a reasonably straightforward transaction.
