I'm saving for a Scirocco but cant decide which one. Iy's going to be a used buy & there are a fair few out there. Which is better the 2.0 TFSI petrol or the TDI 170. I will be doing roughly 12k miles per year & the insurance is the same price for me. I love the economy of a diesel but miss the soul the petrol cars have. I 'm not going dsg just manual for me.

Which is better or would you chose an alternative?

Depends on the sort of miles you do too. Short runs? Motorways?

I spent a few weeks with a 170bhp Scirocco while I also had my MK5 Golf GTI. I really rather liked the Scirocco, the cabin is a nice place to be but the engine is a bit of a let down. I remember thinking that car with the engine from my GTI would be great!

For 12k per year I'd go for petrol.

Petrol.

For the performance on offer the mpg shouldn't be too shabby.

I've never understood the 'should I diesel/petrol' thing. Which one sounds nicer?

I have the 2.0L TSI Scirocco GT (petrol) and can get very high 30's mpg on motorways. Going steady I have had just over 40mpg before on long motorway journeys! It cruises along quite nicely. Can't comment on the diesel but personally I would much rather have petrol.

All the best

I test drove both petrol and diesel Scirocco's they were both excellent I bought the diesel as I was doing 300 miles a week which averaged between 45-50mpg on the motorway the petrol will probably be 15-20mpg less.

Great cars you won't be disappointed just make sure you get the GT over the standard car for the extra kit it has.

If you were to get a DSG equipped car, the diesel is a good choice. But in a manual I would say petrol every time. The oil burners need lots of smooth gearchanges to make good progress. (ie not surge , pause,, surge, pause repeat)

The larger VW petrol engines can provide relatively good mpg for the performance on offer. Unfortunately when you start to press-on they can drop like a stone.

If I'm mincing about, I can get 28-30mpg driving around town however only around 18mpg if I start to get a bit excited. Same on the motorway... At 70mph, 36mpg is achievable however much above that and you're looking at 24mpg (so I've been told).

Thank you, nice to read real world reviews rather than the manufacturers figures
