Car insurance after the owner has died.
Discussion
My Dad died last Friday and there is a thread about it so thanks to all the replies. Shows the PH massive in a great light yet again. Thanks.
But to practicalities:
His ex wife is a named driver on his car insurance policy but as he is no longer with us, I'm betting that the policy is no longer valid and that she can't drive it. A real pain as he lived in the middle of nowhere and use of a car is essential.
I also presume that the car is now uninsured parked on a public road or is there a grace period. I have tried his company, Saga, but closed on Sunday as old people don't drive at weekends

Ive just been through this with my mum, you are correct that the insurance is invalidated on death but they dont instantly cancel it, phone them tomorrow and they may transfer the policy to you for a fee. I was pleasantly surprised how helpfull home & car insurance were under the circumstances when mum died.
My grandmother didn't have a driving license, but she had a car with a policy in her name with my mum and uncle as named drivers.
Upon her unfortunate passing, the insurance company didn't invalidate the policy, they gave the option of a policy refund or a transfer to either named driver for a small admin fee. In the end they decided to sell te car and the insurer agreed to keep it on risk for 2 weeks whilst they did, then gave a pro rata refund after that.
Sorry to hear about your dad. RIP
