New to quad bikes.
Discussion
Im looking for a quad bike, but other than E-bay I don't really know where to look.
Also I don't want to go for a land speed record I want to move trailers sub 500kg and generally move stuff about. I might commute the half a mile to the horse yard in heavy snow.
So what am I looking for? will a chain driven thing be suitable? or do I need a 4wd beast of a thing? 200cc or 500cc thing?
Also what forum do I use GG, the lounge, off road?

Recently bought a Honda TRX300 shaft driven 2 wheel drive Quad.
Got it off ebay.
Its in fairly decent condition, given it a good going over and service. Starts on the button and will move the horse trailer about 950kg unladen.
Only had a limited budget, but like you wanted it for around the horses, chain harrowing etc. Went for honda as it had the reliability behind it.

If you're looking at the cheaper end of the scale, I can recommend Quadzilla as an alternative to the Chinese makes. Cheap enough for parts and good enough for a giggle.
Be warned, you will quickly get bored of a 250.
I had one for 2 months then got a Honda TRX 450, awesome bit of kit.
Would love another, but it seems the whole quad scene has died down. There used to be monthly meets and ride outs near me, but the sites seem dead now, quadheaven, etc.
Always said, quads and jet skis are the best £ per smile there is to be had.

unless ive missed it, whats your budget?
Honda Big Reds, albeit older ones, are going for about 6-800 if your patient and look in the right places. Even in 2WD their very capable and reliable, 4wd being the better pick.
I run a Yamaha Banshee, by no means a practical quad but its likely to pull your arms out of their sockets..i don't get on with 4 strokes at all. Although if its a practical reliable work horse your after then a 4stroke is all you need, which the majority of farm/utility quads will be anyway.
I second doogz by staying well away from Chinese poo on wheels. they might seem like a bargain for the first month of use but once they go bang parts will be a nightmare to find and they'll generally be a cack quality quad.

A Honda.
That's what every farmer I know has got.
Unless you are dragging stuff through really heavy terrain, I wouldn't go for 4WD either. They are heavier and not so much fun to punt around. With 2WD you corner mostly on the throttle, a 4WD tends to plough on into understeer
4WD is also much easier to roll over. That's what every farmer I know has got.

Its about £500-£800, but all the bikes with names I know Honda Yamaha seem to have big problems with them. Honda Big Reds, albeit older ones, are going for about 6-800 if your patient and look in the right places. Even in 2WD their very capable and reliable, 4wd being the better pick.

You mention 2 stroke? I thought they were all 4 stroke?
OP will need to change his name to Major Falloff!!
Lots of 2 stroke trikes made in the past, many were evolutions of trikes. Banshee engined Yamaha trikes are legendary - 2 stroke twins.
Might be worth looking around some moto-cross events, whilst new quads will be some what over budget owners may know of uncompetitive quads going for less.
Agree with the avoid Chines thoughts, on any I've looked at the build quality has been poor plus lack of spares back up.
