Golf R or Fiesta ST
Discussion
I had the same dilema when I saw how cheap the golf is.
However insurance was just too high on the Golf (Im 23) so couldnt justify it.
As said though they are completly different cars and its remarkable they can even be had for such a small price difference.
I just look forward to the used market for both of them

I test drove an R (among many cars) and ended up with the Fiesta.
I took the Fiesta over 2 years PCP, although I would have been cheaper over 2 years with a Golf R on lease.
The Fiesta is more fun to drive and cheaper to run, the Golf is quicker but a bit boring, especially with DSG (had it on my Leon I was trading in). However the deals they have on the R on lease is brilliant, I got quoted £290 per month with about £1700 deposit over 2 years for a 3 door manual model @ 15K miles per annum.
I went for the Fiesta because I wanted a PCP deal where after a year or so I could trade it in if I wanted and I was not sure about leasing in regard to charges when handing it back (tyre tread, paint chips etc.).
For what I was willing to spend per month on PCP there wasn't much competition to the ST. If I could have afford the payments on the Golf R on PCP over 2 years, I would have bought a Leon Cupra 280

2 very different cars but on the current lease deals there is only £1k difference between them over 2 years. Where would your money go and why?
Fiesta ST is £156 inc vat on a 6+23 lease, so £4524 for 2 years. The cheapest Golf R deal works out at £280 per month, so £6720 for 2 years.
The golf R is nearly £2200 more expensive over the 2 years.
Golf R looks and sounds great but... the wife has a fairly new Golf Bluemotion and have to say that although it is very comfortable and full of gadgets it is a horribly dull and uninspiring car to drive... On the other hand our old Fiesta Black we bought new in the dim and distant past was a brilliant drivers car...
For the life of me god knows how VW transform such a dull car???

For a £1000 difference, why would you not have the Golf. Only 4 insurance groups in it so not going to be a huge difference in insurance costs.
The only thing which would put me off a Golf R is the stupid lead times. If you can get one which isn't too far away, take that every day. Also they are one of the most stolen cars at the moment. Not really heard anything about the ST being stolen.

Talking personal leases but the cheapest I can find on an ST3 is 23x £179.99pm with £1079.92 initial payment = £5299.69The cheapest Golf R deal works out at £280 per month, so £6720 for 2 years.

Cheapest Golf R deal i currently see running is 23x £178.79pm with £2503.03 initial payment = £6615.20
So under £1500 difference.
If either can be had cheaper on a personal contract (not business) then i'd be more than happy to see it.
Lead time for a golf is an absolute killer. I tend to change my mind on what car i want from week to week so not sure I would manage the lead time.
