Hi All, new to the forum and looking for some advice if possible.

I bought my mk7 golf back in May (2nd hand - 10 months old when I bought it) and the adaptive cruise control was broken, never reported it at the time, for whatever reason. Anyway, I put it in to VW Arnold Clark the other day and they are saying that it isn't covered under warranty as the sensor is broken, not defective.

Can anyone tell me if there is some kind of fault log captured which would tell them when the device stopped working i.e. before I bought the car? Refusing to be another one of the many shafted by AC.

Cheers

You could take it to an independent and ask them to look at the VCDS data logging - that may shed some light on it. However it's also pretty easy to clear the data so expect AC to have done that before selling the car to you.

Have they said why it is broken? Is there visible damage?

They haven't given me the details yet, expecting another call tomorrow.

Surely if they wiped the dvts before I bought it, from day 1 the fault would be getting logged again....

Ready for a bit of a scrap with them over this as they appear to have a pretty bad reputhat I on with this kind of thing.

Thanks for the tip though, I'll be sure to bring it up when I speak to them tomorrow.

If the car is only 15-16 months old won't it still be covered by the original 3 year VW warranty? If so you could possibly pursue it via VW rather than Arnold Clark, who won't want anthing to do with it. I suspect it is an expensive thing to replace/fix.

Sounds like physically damaged? if that's the case it probably shouldn't be covered.

Good old Arnold Clark. Yet another example why I'd never use them.

Is it one of the flat plastic square things or the glass ball as the radar device?

It's the glass ball.

A have said it is physically damaged, my point is that it has never worked and therefore it was broken when I bought the car, hence trying to find out about the logging. I hate being in the position where you have to take their word for it.

I'll try throwing the logging system at them and see if it sticks, otherwise I'll pursue it through VW themselves, a nice letter can be quite powerful on occasion.

Cheers for the tips though gents, appreciate it.

The problem is convincing the dealer it was not working back in May, a lot can happen 5 months. The car should have been returned as soon as the fault was discovered, rather than waiting so long.

The physical damage could be a stone or other object thrown onto the sensor thus breaking it.

If it was broken in May, why leave it until now to report it to the dealer?

If it's broken, then I think you're going to have a hard time proving it hasn't been done in the last 5 months

I get that they have me over a barrel without evidence, that's why I'm looking for something I can go back with, surely the error readout I'm getting is being logged somewhere, which I would expect to go all the way back to the day I drove it off the forecourt.

I'll just need to see what they say and take it from there, don't hold out much hope mind you given it is AC.

It should probably be noted that the radar being broken will mean the collision detection and city braking systems also won't work.

I'm not a fan of AC but in this case, they're just acting sensibly.

OP you've made an error not having raised it on day 1 (even if you wanted to defer the repair).

Even though you didn't cause the damage, you should take responsibility for your actions. You had the opportunity, its silly to blame AC in this case given your actions are like those of a complete chancer trying it on...

I'm not trying to deny that, nor am in blaming AC, all I was asking for was some knowledge on how the car logs problems which will give me something to talk about.

I'm well aware of what I should have done but I'm not going to follow one mistake with another if there is a chance I can prove the car was logging problems from the day I bought it then I'm going to follow it up. I know personally that it has never worked so I can't reconcile it with myself just lying down and taking it, they sold me a car with broken components and are now telling me I have to pay for it, so I'll fight it as much as I can.

There are still 2 years left on the manufacturers warranty and 1 year with the dealer.

Yes, Arnold Clark are a franchise dealer.

Be interested to know what they are saying is broken and what the retail cost would be for repair.

Can't imagine the sensors are Al that cheap. That's the only thing I could see 'broken' ie stone damage.

Spoke to them this afternoon and they are saying the brackets that hold the camera in place are broken camera is misaligned, they've sid a pressure washer or a car wash could do it, which to me seems odd.

Anyway, £154 inc VAT to fix it, going to have to take it on the chin.

You can phone VW in Milton Keynes directly and speak to someone about warranty claims. On several occasions I have found them to be extremely helpful, on one occasion the guy I spoke to was a complete bell end.

Google for their number
