Audi LA concept 'begins a new era of design'

New Head of Design means a fresh styling direction for Audi, beginning with whatever this is

Given Audi's last motor show concept was a four-door version of a two-door coupe that looked quite a lot like an existing four-door version of a two-door coupe based on a saloon, we won't even guess what this car will be. It literally could be anything on Audi's recent form. Perhaps a two-door track-prepped Q3 with a hydrogen fuel cell and crocodile leather.

We've had the four-door TT. Two-door A8 maybe?
We've had the four-door TT. Two-door A8 maybe?
Anyway. What we do know about this LA show concept is that it's the first car with the design signature of new styling boss Marc Lichte. Given how successful Audi's recent styling efforts have been with both press and customers that's a big task for the German. His previous work at VW before joining Audi in February included the Mk5, 6 and 7 Golfs plus the Touareg and Phaeton.

Though we're promised a 'highly emotional' new design idiom from Lichte, the core Audi values of 'sportiness, lightweight design and quattro drive' have been preserved. It will be a 'new beginning', says Audi, in both interior and exterior design. With both the A4 and R8 due for replacement soon this car could hint at some styling cues for those. When we can discover what on earth it looks like.

Well, given his revolutionary work on the Mk5, Mk6 and Mk7 Golf, I imagine we can expect something truly startling.

I mean, just look at the guy:

When a big German manufacturer announces a new design direction, the first thing that springs to mind is what Bangle did to BMW.

I know what you mean - and judging from the back of the car shown in that picture above, there is something equally bizarre going on with this new designer. I bet he has some nonsense description for his ideas, too - wasn't the bangle one something about "flame surface"?

The car was affectionately know as 'Bangle Butt' however ironically that 7 was the biggest seller and a very good car. I actually liked it

I think it means they have a new jelly mould. Perhaps different models will be differentiated by how much they have set and how much they sag once released from the mould.

The E65 7 series was definitely Bangle's greatest triumph at BMW. Sure, it was striking and avant garde but it still looks good now whereas the current 7 series just looks like an outsize 5 series.

Dear Mr Lichte,
For Christmas I'd really like you to design a car that...

... Doesn't let all of water on the roof travel down and into my lap each time I open the front window a few millimetres (as per the Golf 5, 6 and 7)
... Uses a sensible sized wheel with a profile of at least 40
... Has no "S-line" option. You shall design something better and call it RS if you must. No cop-out for you.
... Looks best in a primary colour and ruins your artistic vision when using hues of metal and coal.
... Provides an interface to existing technological protocols and standards. You should maybe provide a smartphone or tablet option but only for it to host your new "app"; those of us with such devices should be able to reuse them to gain your "rich and immersive entertainment and navigation experience".

Whilst we all know that you "advance through technology", it doesn't give you license to pop over to Silicone Valley and bring back some shiny new swag to stick on your motor. Nor should you go to Shoreditch (it is London and full of "hipsters") and listen to people that will you show you "on-trend" tech.

So please just design a good looking car that handles and drives well, costs a reassuringly good amount (we shall be using money and probably not BitCoin) and doesn't fall apart. Put the technology into the mechanical bits and leave the faux carbon alone.

thanks!
ps: if you could make it a bit lairy whilst making a good noise we'd be really happy.

When a big German manufacturer announces a new design direction I assume they have signed off on a new headlight. And then I go back to sleep zzzzz

Bangle was way ahead of his time, don't knock him.

Even now his designs look surprisingly fresh and have aged well imo.

That's what I was thinking. I wonder if in 5 years if we'll look back at the 2014 Audi A6's as the last of the classic Audi designs in the same way we do the e38/e39/e46.

What is "quattro drive" exactly? An ideal? Audi don't design and engineer their own 4WD systems.

I can certainly see the lightweight design. Perhaps they can design the car to be lightweight too.
