Anyone else noticed that you can have a long bus layby, and the bus pulls in and leaves the back end out in the road? There is no one in front, yet they block the highway. Why are they doing this, surely it's illegal?

Maybe they are sick of people not letting them pull out again?

That is prehaps because most bus drivers, like cabbies are aholes.
The buses are slow and stop every half a mile,if there is no bay then they block a lane while Mavis fiddles around for a quids worth of coppers to go two stops.
That is on top of the fact that following one takes five years off your life from breathing all the st that most seem to spew out even at low throttle.
If they are anything like the moronic backwards coont that drives our local service and they tend to be,they could do with grasping the concept of mirror-signal-manoeuvre and give thanks when some one does let them out.

I find most bus drivers are all right but my local ones are a bunch of muppets who'll block people in at junctions and strand people on the wrong side of the road as they pull out. I witnessed one drive at a woman on a zebra crossing with his hand on his horn. I think poor standards selecting employees and cynicism and arrogance perhaps fester in certain places.

One of our local companies seem to enjoy blocking both lanes at traffic lights, to avoid quicker traffic who can get away quicker getting past without hold up

This seems to be happening more and more in central london and the worst thing is they then pull up at a bus stop less than 200 yrds from the traffic light and then some of the traffic that could of gone round them gets trapped behind them!

West London they all do this, traffic is therefore reduced to the speed of the buses as they refuse to use pull into the bus stop instead stopping with their bus obstructing the flow of traffic in streets lined with parked cars. As a car driver who often uses buses I have noticed the standard of bus driving is shockingly poor.

If they pulled the back end into the layby the doors would be hanging over the edge of the layby at the front, not where the raised actual stop is. Sadly some of us have to use them...

Spot on, and what does not help is the bad layout of some bus stops.

Here is a prime example, if I was to stop at the raised pavement-the light color kerbs- the rear of the bus would block the road, if I park as I have in the picture, the old grannies moan!

It's so they don't have to wait for someone to let them belch their way back into the traffic, as the people on the bus are always very important and it is much more critical that they get to the DSS office, school or cat food shop a bit sooner than it is for the thousands of people in cars that these piss soaked boxes of misery delay every day get to their destination any time soon.

Bus drivers are one of the best examples of how people drive when they have video cameras on their vehicles. They can do virtually anything they want because they don't have to worry about retaliation.

I'd say it's also a good example of how people drive when they are a mouth breathing tt as well. I think in all the years I had to catch busses as a kid/teenager and when I've had to catch them since I cannot remember the driver being anything other than obtuse, unhelpful, rude or outright obnoxious. I don't know if they are specially trained or selected to be horrible or if having to deal with the sort of people who catch busses all day turns you that way.

I reckon you would be in a spot of bother if a disembarking passenger were injured other than with the bus door placed closest to the stop . . .

Not being a bus user I hadn't considered that. Well, that explains a lot. So it's the bus stop design at fault, not necessarily the bus driver. I almost feel guilty, but I have seen too many other instances where they block overtakes as someone else mentioned. Got a feeling it it part of the anti car conspiracy.

In Reading the roads planning department purposely filled in all the bus stop pull overs down the main routes. Now the buses just stop in the road and hold up all the traffic. They even put in islands to prevent cars going round the stationary buses.

Now, every car is only as fast as the buses. This apparently was the whole purpose and is required to lower the average speed of traffic down to 15mph.

wkers. mad And the reason why I now never let a bus out infront of me if I can avoid it.

Bus on the south circular today, right indicator going, people clearly still getting on,didn't fool anybody.

The road at that point is plenty wide enough for everybody to pass.
