I have a Volvo s40 2003 1.9 d sport, when I started her up I heard a noise as if a belt or something similar had snapped or came loose, while driving a short distance for diagnostic purpose there was a loss of power especially going up a hill, I can get speed to 60 after a lot of coaxing, but only 20 going up hill, this morning I took it to the garage and noticed that it was smoking and burning oil through exhaust, garage thinks its the turbo, but will put it up and have a look, could this be anything else ? Thanks in advance for your reply.

sounds like a turbo to me, although I guess a dropped valve or holed piston might possibilities?

If you heard something snap or come loose, I don't think that I'd have driven it before finding out what the problem was.

You could have caused more engine damage by doing so.

Its notoriously difficult to diagnose a car from a description of the problem, hence my reply being so short.

I think you might have posted up more than one thread and there's some hints at possibilities on the other one.

It will need to be examined by someone to determine the problem.

If it's burning oil and down on power then a turbo issue is likely (but not certain).

Most likely the turbo. Any other guess is just a wild stab in the dark, so you're best just waiting for the diagnosis from the garage.

If it is oil (white/blue smoke) then it probably is the turbo. If it is black than an air feed pipe or intercooler has gone pop. It is quite common for the air feed pipe from intercooler to air intake to go pop on these (at the top of the engine).

Thanks folks, really appreciate your advice. New to the forum so excuse my double posting. My initial though was the alternator but general consensus seems to be turbo. Everything else sound on the car, regularly serviced do you think its worth getting the turbo replaced or giving her up as a lost cause.Just not wanting ripped at garage.cheers

See what the diagnosis is, see what the repair cost is vs the value of the car and also against the expense of buying another car with unknown history.

Put it this way, once its fixed, you know its fixed. You know the history on it anyway, and you can carry on ensuring things are sorted out / serviced on time etc etc.

Sometimes its better the devil you know, than the devil you dont, right?

This isn't a dog at you in particular, but something I'm seeing more of.

'Help, my cars broke, it did xyz and now is doing xyz. It's in the garage and they think it's xyz, is this correct?'

Do you not trust the diagnosis from the garage? If so why did you take it there.

As a woman I have a natural distrust of garages, due to a couple of bad experiences in the past. Also I have only moved to this town a year ago and the garage that I was recommended to from a "friend" forgot to put the windscreen washer pump, back in after an m.o.t. Its a small place and not many garages to choose from.
Is it wrong to want to be informed about the mechanics of my car before I hand my hard earned cash over. It is a forum after all. Which I am very grateful for the advice and suggestions I've had from others. The criticism well "you can stick it up your arse ! Just a thought, is it the lack of automotive knowledge that makes people so critical. Not directing at you necessarily.

Totally. It was their roads, their fuel and their driving test.

I think the frustration of the regulars of seeing so many threads that say "My car is broken and the garage tell me such and such is the problem, are they right?"

Realisy is we have no idea and cars are so complex these days its aking to saying "My Doctor tells me I have Supraventricular tachycardia, what's the cause."

If you don't like the diagnosis then, unless its a speacialist car on a specialist forum its probably best to get a second opinion from another garage.
