Pistonheaders,

My Dad is moving back to Australia and as part of that, is offloading all the stuff that he doesn't want to/can't take. Included in this is his car, an 11 plate Ford Focus.

He mentioned to me the other day that he was planning on putting through a main dealer/webuyanycar or similar. Rather than him do this and lose more money than he has to, I will sell it privately for him. I have the space on the drive and sure a boggo 1.6 Focus will go quite quickly, so am willing to try and get him a bit more for it. If I can't sell it, I will flog it to webuyanycar and he is no worse off anyway.

My question is if I do this, what should I do with the V5? I see there are a number of options -
1) My Dad signs the V5 over to me, as well as providing a receipt. This would prove ownership (through the receipt) and that the car is registered to the seller. Downside to this is that it goes from a 2 owner car to 3.
2) My Dad pre signs the V5. This means the car stays at 2 owners, but may put off some buyers. I can get a copy of my Dad's passport/other docs to help allay fears but aware it may still put some off.

Any opinions on this situation? What would you do and what would you expect to see? Obviously number 1 would be ideal but adding an extra owner to the and waiting for the DVLA to return a new V5 is something I would like to avoid if possible.

I have never asked for or been shown a copy of a sellers passport. Long as I go away with the car and the V5 I'm happy. I'd just get him to sign the sellers side and fill in the blanks when it sells, then give the buyer the green slip

Just sell it and explain you are selling it for your dad, should be made easier as you have same surname.
And as said many times before, name on V5 does not mean the vehicle owner, and anyone can sign the V5 just make sure you send it off once sold.

That suits me - I would be happy buying a car like that but just wanted to check with others.

Thanks both.
