I've finally cleared my stuffed 307 from the drive, leaving me with loads of space for a project.

I'm mechanically inept, but want to develop skills, rather than stay mechanically inept. £2000 to buy the base car. Thing is, this project needs also to be able to have a modicum of physical practicality (meaning can have hideous mpg) but must be able to transport stuff, like a dog. Finally, it must have scope for making faster.

I was thinking 850 T5, Saab 9000 Aero, E34 535i, XJ, S8, B5 S4, E39 540i...

I realise some of the above would have to be very ropy and astronomical miles at £2k but meh.

The simpler the better, S8 and XJ (and possibly the BMWs) would scare me as cars to learn on.

Big, simple V8 with as few computer controlled systems as possible would be my choice. In the same position as you wanting to learn and swapped a diesel Merc for a 4.0 Jeep and an MX5 both of which are meant to be pretty simple engines.

Are you wanting fast, cruiser, something else? V8 Disco or Jeep? My plan is to give the Jeep some basic off-road upgrades.

This or clio sport. Mk2 Golf GTIs are easy to spanner too but I've not checked prices for a while and they were heading north at a rapid rate last time I did.

Not a WRX wagon. If you want a project, don't choose an boxer where almost anything you do to it is an engine-out job. Get a nice right-way-up inline lump so you can at least get the head off without taking the engine out.
