Hi,

I've just bought a private plate on eBay and have been sent the V778 retention document by the seller. It has been signed, but I'm just wondering how exactly the transfer works.

Will I become legal owner of the plate when it gets transferred onto my vehicle? There is a section to name a nominee (which will be me), but when I send off my v5 etc, will the new documentation come back to me or will it all go to the grantee (the ebay seller)?

The document itself is quite unclear around this and I can't seem to find anything useful on the net.

Thanks

It is assigned to the vehicle, so can be transferred at a later date to another vehicle, or put on retention. For the latter it will be in your name.

You need to be made a nominee so you can transfer the plate onto your car. This costs £25 and should be done by the grantee because if you fill it out and send it off then it will be returned to the grantee. I just paid the grantee the extra £25 with my details and they sent it back to me. Please make sure the retention document is in date!!!

Guys you seem to be knowledgeable about the transfer process and the original question was answered, so rather than starting a new thread I would be very grateful if you could help me with a similar predicament.

I have a private plate on my current car. I am looking to sell this car (but I'm in no rush so will transfer the plate off of it first). I want to transfer the plate to my mums car as I have no other car and we would both rather it be on a vehicle than on retention.

Now, I have filled out the V317 but have just realised I believe she needs to be a nominee for it to go on her car, is this correct? do I send both forms together to make her a nominee or do I send the nominee form first and then wait for it to come back and then send of the V317?

Thank you in advance for any knowledgeable advice.

Both you and your mum need to complete the application - £80 to transfer - https://www.gov.uk/transferring-vehicle-registrati...

V8LM, thank you for the reply. However, I'm a little confused. I have already filled out a V317 but not sent it becasue I thought she might need to be made a nominee first, she is not currently a nominee for my plate. Am i overcomplicating a simple situation?

1. Put a cross in the first box in Section 1 (To transfer).
2. Fill out and sign Section 2 (details of your car that currently has the registration).
3. Fill out the details of your mum's car in Section 3 and she sign this (details of your mums car onto which the registration is being put).
4. Write out cheque for £80 to DVLA Swansea
5. Post the completed form, the cheque, both V5Cs and MOTs (if appropriate) to DVLA Personalised Registrations, Swansea SA99 1DS

ETA: The 'Nominee' is only for moving a plate off retention. Here, the Grantee is the person who has the right to use the registration (the person who bought the right to use the registration by a retention certificate (through the DVLA for example) or is the RK of the car from which the registration was transferred). When on retention the Grantee can specify a Nominee, who is also able to have the registration put on a car for which they are the RK.
