Discussion
I have a Landrover Discovery which I want to tow an Ifor Willams horse trailer with.
I do not have my B+E licence so I was considering down plating the trailer to bring it within my licence.
The trailer weighs 1000kgs and is currently plated to tow 2340kgs.
The minimum IFOR will down plate to is 1800kgs.
My pony weighs 450kgs.
So, will down plating mean that I can tow without the B+E?
I have been told that if I want to down plate the trailer I will need a car with a lesser tow capability due to the lesser weight. This by Ifor themselves.
Surely towing a trailer with a reduced maximum weight with a car that is heavy enough to manouver it safely is far better than using a smaller car???? The actual physical weight of the trailer hasn't been reduced.
Is there another way around this?
Would i actually be prosecuted for towing with a Landrover instead of a Xfira???
Thanks for any help

No. Not unless you have the world's lightest Disco, over a ton shy of their usual weight...I do not have my B+E licence so I was considering down plating the trailer to bring it within my licence.

is as good an overview of the B vs B+E rules as I've seen.
Basically, your problem is that you have a licence to tow small stuff, and want to tow big stuff, which requires a big tow car.

Take your trailer test?Ponge69 said:

Eminently likely, assuming you came to the attention of the law in the first place. In addition to being tugged for driving otherwise than in accordance with your licence, you are very likely to have insurance issues if this all unravels following a collision. There are plenty of threads on here worth looking at.
Anyway, even the 200/300 model Disco's (i.e. the '90's version) comes in at over 2,200 unladen, and approximately 2,700 - 2,800 GVW (figures off the top of my head
), so you've no chance of being able to tow a horse in a box trailer legally, as your max trailer weight is so low, even a 750 kg unbraked trailer would put you over the limit.

B category
Vehicle not more than 3500 kg plated GVW
B category towing
A trailer of 750 kg max plated MAM may be towed by a B category vehicle making a possible total plated MAM of 4250 kg
If a trailer over 750 kg plated MAM is towed by a B category vehicle then the plated GVW of the vehicle added to the plated MAM of the trailer (MTPLM of a caravan) must not total more than 3500 kg
GVW MAM MTPLM all have exactly the same meaning for licencing - the maximum permissible legal weight something can be when fully loaded
If the Disco has a GVW of say 2510 and the trailer has a MAM of 2340 then the total MAM is 4850 so well over the 3500 limit
What you need is something like a 4x4 Skoda Octavia with a GVW of 1998 and perhaps an IW HB 403 single trailer down plated from 1600 to 1500 via contact with IW

Should have read this before posting this!.
However, having read the above I am still none the wiser as to whether I can actually tow on a B licence or not.
On occasions I drive a Citreon Berlingo Enterprise 2.0HDi Van with a 6ft x 4ft trailer on the back for bikes, fences, grass and random stuff. Having not done my trailer test does this mean I cannot actually tow anything or am I restricted to a lesser weight limit? The trailer in question has no MAM or is not plated, it is a simple frame with boarding.
OP, sorry to hi-jack
