Recommendations please for a used small van (up to £3000) for use in Scottish Highlands. Some light off road use for all-season camping, wildlife watching etc. Medium to light DIY loads. Frequent visits to isolated spots so economy, reliability and serviceability above style. First self-purchase vehicle in 40 years so go easy on me. Many thanks...

Depending on how small...Mitsubishi Delica.

Although I may have misunderstood the brief by the camping requirement..

A £3k Transporter will be leggy and a tired. A Transit will be rotten.

A 2.0 HDi Berlingo would be a good bet, doesn't rot and engines are reliable IME. Suspension can be a weak point, but one thats had an easy life should be ok.

04 on Caddys should be in this price range. I had the previous shape witj the SDI engine, which was mechanically faultless at 150k, but suffered with niggly faults with switchgear and door locks etc.

I have a Toyota Hiace now, which feels bombproof and isn't too big. It doesn't meet your requirements for economy and off road ability though!

Don't buy a connect. Injector and pump issues kill most of the tdci engines
