Need a 6/7 seater- don't want one- help?
Discussion
Hi everyone
I've lurked around for years but have always managed to find what I'm looking for without posting but the last I could find was 2012 so I wondered if there are any fresh opinions...
I have a 2011 A3 2.0 TDI Black Edition and the wife has a 2003 TT 3.2 DSG... All was fine, we both love our cars and the TT just flew through MOT for the 6th time but then... 4th child is now on the way- apparently not liking 7 seaters wasn't a good enough reason to not want more children.
The wife at the moment takes the boys in her car and for family trips we use mine. So far the plan is to keep mine and the wife changes hers to the 'practical' car.
I looked at the Q7 but to be honest we just don't have a whole lot of money and I'm concerned it might break and cost a fortune. I then looked at the Defender but the wife said she'd feel like a farmer and she doesn't like "Mummy cars"...So I've been trawling the net looking for a sporty looking car with enough room to fit us all in- Considering she recommends a TT for people with up to 3 kids you can probs guess that she's more of a style over function person and I don't want to change my car...
Help/opinions? I feel like I'm going round in circles!

Thanks for the replies...
I'm sure you're joking about the 2 cars thing but I've actually suggested this to the wife as a serious option- I was thinking my and my oldest could go in mine and she could go with the 2 young'ns and the baby...she wasn't keen.
I'm thinking 4x4- she's foreign so doesn't mind the roly poly american feel cars and she has no concept of fuel economy so any decent 4x4s with 7 seats you can think of?
She's really not a fan of MPVs...I actually quite like the S-Max... except when I suggested that she said she'll get an S3 and I can have the S-Max...no.

My mate has just gone through a similar thought process. He ended up keeping his partners Saab for the commute and got a Dodge Journey for the family bus. It's not the fastest or the nicest to drive but it was cheap and well specced. Does what is says on the tin although I suspect the Ford will be a bit more dynamic to drive.
Have a drive in one. We had an Espace and as an every day driving companion it was not as bad as you might think. Certainly as a family car it was superb.
Ours was the later 2.0 dci which is reliable. Not the earlier 1.9 that is not.
Lots of people will tell you that they break down. They had the earlier one!

If she doesn't like the idea of an MPV, then more's the pity as the SMAX really is a decent drive. I have one and it's far better fun to punt than my previous Audi A4 B7. As you know you aren't going to be driving the car on it's door handles if you've jammed it full of kids so what about one of these - bit of a barge and as old as the hills but they are a fantastic family car:
If money is an issue dont get an again SUV, stick with a People carrier, you will get newer/lower miles for the same money and less to go wrong, generally less to run and they do they job.
You could get an old diesel X5 but they have some expensive habits, the tyres are huge and expensive and they arent that good on fuel, even in diesel form.

I've been eyeing up Subaru Outbacks lately in 3 litre guise. A car that has appeared in the searches is a Subaru Tribeca and they have a 3rd row of seats. Certainly a left field choice but worth considering?
You know she might actually like the newer Outback...I'm going to send her a pic then I'll look at costs etc. I think I'll try to get her to try the S-Max but I'm not sure she'll even give it a go. I'd like to though.
We've used a V70 with rear-facing seats on and off for years, but always needed a roofbox.
Bought an XC90 this summer and loving it - our youngest are 5 & 7 and have their own space & cubby-holes, teenagers are 15 & 16 and get plenty of space in the middle.
When car is in 5-seat mode the boot is massive, in 7-seat mode it's adequate and the split folding tailgate is brilliant for holding stuff in place and being able to use the depth of the boot.
If budget is a problem then get real and look at SMax, Galaxy etc; regardless you probably need to look realistically at whether running 3 cars is affordable unless you're on a properly PH salary. I find it bad enough running 2 cars, albeit on just 1 salary.

I like the Volvos but she hasn't been chuffed with them; the only thing that concerns me is the cost- £10- £12k is the max.
Any thoughts on Jeeps?
Landcruiser for all day long. Preferably with a V8 petrol:

I asked this very question earlier in the year.
The odd helpful post interspersed the general PH mindset of an abortion being preferable to an MPV.
In the end we went very left field and bought a van derived MPV for weekends/family trips and kept both cars on. Having looked at Caravelles and Vianos we settled on a Jap import. Best decision of the year.
