Selling a car that was taxed "before" 1st Oct
Discussion
Probably been answered in the very long tax changes thread - but a search hasn't revealed the answer to me!
My understanding is that after 1st October, ALL cars are purchased without tax, and has to be purchased at the point of sale.
My old man, in his usual belligerent fashion, was telling me that's not the case with cars taxed before October 1st, and that the tax transfers with the car... I've not found any reference to this, nor does it make sense if there's a switch over.
So, over to you - is he just making it up / got it wrong? Or have I missed this one point?

Ah ha! The plot thickens...
...he took the car in as trade before Oct 1st, filled in the yellow slip and sent to the DVLA.
So, when he sells the car, the tax will transfer as it was a trader which purchased before Oct 1st... I think?
I can't change the thread title, but it should be selling a car as a trade in before Oct 1st, does tax transfer.

OK, found the answer from a DVLA webchat transcript:
Comment From Jackie Carroll:
We’ve had a vehicle in stock since August with a valid tax disc until next June. If we sell the vehicle on 1st October can we transfer the tax to the new owner? If not, what happens to the refund if we don’t put the vehicle in our name before we sell it?
Wayne Stephens (DVLA):
No, the tax becomes non transferable from 1 October. Any remaining months of tax will be refunded to the previous keeper on DVLA records.
Sorry for the lack of searching before. Makes the case of dealers a bit more painful.
