BMW 1 Series: Not so pretty. BMW 2 Series: rather pretty.
New BMW 2 Series Active Tourer: Hound. BMW 3 & 5 Series Saloon and Touring versions: Good looking cars BMW 3&5 Series GT versions: You just want to cry.
BMW 4 and 6 Series: Desirable X1 X3 and X6 Object of Derision.

The pattern? Well it's my own personal opinion to be fair but why the hell can't a company that turns out some very attractive saloons, estates and coupes style one decent looking hatch in its line up.
Audi can do it 5 door A5 and A7 are fairly pleasing on the eye.

And while I'm on the subject, the 2 Series Active Tourer. Saw my first one in a showroom window. Oof! BMW better prepare for a law suit from Renault as it's patently obvious (see what I did there?) that the BMW design team photocopied a side view of an original Megane Scenic, stuck a BMW grill on it and with a cheery "job done" made their way to the pub.

It's all subjective really. Personally all BMW's since the E30 have made me wince.

The Nineties BMW 3 series compacts were pretty ugly too. Its either a ploy to get you to pay more and purchase a proper BMW, or they are widening the net and trying to appeal to purchasers of ugly cars too? Cant really figure it out!

My dad has a year old 116d in metallic dark blue , and I reckon it looks really nice.I like the front mid engined look.
Its a subjective thing.

4 Series Gran Coupe is a beautiful hatchback. Despite it being labeled as a coupe, technically it's a hatchback with the boot.

I personally quite like the 1 Series. Never not liked it, and it's always grown on me.

The back is too tapered so it looks awkward from every angle, it's a bit like the Renee Zellweger of the Audi range

Just edited as meant the Gran coupé instead of just the coupe as that is indeed a coupé.

But a coupé is strictly speaking a 2 door vehicle with a fixed roof. Adding 2 more doors doesn't change the definition of the word. Just because it's marketed as a coupé doesn't make it one.

A hatchback however comes in a 3 or 5 door format. Although it only features 2 or 4 doors on the side; but because the boot opens with the glass panel it counts as a door, hence the making them 3/5.

So the 4 Series Gran Coupé has a boot which is fits into the latter category.

Certainly no looker Steve, but that does mean they go cheap and the 6-cylinder ones aren't bad to drive and reasonably quick compared to a 3-litre coupe. They feel more bit more 'compact' than a new 1-series too, although only slightly shorter but with less overhangs. The 1-series front end/grille seems a bit 'Roy Schneider' to me still, take a while to get used to it

Well the 1 series never had a shark nose so, maybe it was Roy instead? "I think we are going to need a bigger boot"!

Agreed BMW used to produce such good looking cars now just a mess of badly styled brash looking dogs. Chief designer should be made to study the Classic lines of beauties like the old 3.0 csi and 635 csi, then have a rethink before designing any more new models!

smile - yeah, it just seems a bit bluff/flat at the front now. The boot is a bit bigger though, although have to fold a rear seat down in both to get my BMX in

They remind me a bit of the Merc CLS - can't help thinking of a Hermit crab when I see those sloping back ends. Still, handsome is as handsome does as they say.....

I couldn't disagree more, the rear of the A7 is about the only single piece of interesting styling of any non R8 Audi.

Car design nowadays is restrained by the need to comply with all manner of safety laws for crash safety and pedestrian impacts and that makes them all bulbous looking. No more sharp lines and shark noses. Manufacturers are also desperate to knock out all manner of different bodystyles and cars under their different brands based around the same platform. It's a cheap way to penetrate all corners of the market. Hence carbon copies and dodgy looks.

I love the a7! Especially with the rear wing up.
