The cars in question are an E46 330ci, and a mk1 Honda Jazz 1.4 sport, both auto.
The journey, Cheshire to a village in the Cotswolds, then to london ( Hillingdon tube really ) back to Cotswolds, back to Cheshire.
This is a journey that I have made dozens of times in the 330, for various reasons I took the Jazz this week, 4 people, a fair amount of luggage, an large dog, no town driving, all motorway, dual carriageway and fast A roads.
Which car cost the most in fuel on that trip?
I'll post the answer later today.

I suspect the extra 300kg (estimated, possibly more) of passengers and luggage made a whacking great dent in the Honda's consumption.

Considering the Jazz will have been dropping gears on the slightest incline or the first hint of any acceleration request it will be the Jazz. If it isn't then will not be much in it.

Or maybe we are just demonstrating our prejudices.

Where the cars both similarly loaded with weight (same weight of passengers, luggage etc) between the two trips you will compare? Because I think the weight will make more difference to the consumption than the engine size.

I expect the answer from the op will be that the jazz used more than the BMW under the tested circumstances, else I guess the thread wouldn't have been posted.

Just the fact that you created a thread about it would suggest the 330 used the least.

This!

I proved the point when I drove a 3.2 Porsche back from Lee Valley to Reading with the Fiancee following in her 1.3 08MY Ford KA. With both driving in normal conditions at normal speeds the Porsche used a noticeable amount less fuel.

This. And given the distances and the usual vehicle I don't suppose the cruising speed favoured the Jazz.

Unless you drove both cars it's not really an accurate test. Some people just don't drive in a way that's conducive to economy. Likewise in the OP's case, was the BMW fully loaded when comparing mpg? Same weather conditions (a head wind can make a big difference)?

Agree 100%. Added to this the future Mrs Joe5y has one and only one driving style. Her foot pushes the accelerator at the same rate a compression every time only speeding up by changing gear and slowing by braking, heavily.

That said, I have hardly light footed.

My guess the 330 used less fuel. I have a 14 plate Astra 1400 petrol and an 02 Audi A4 1.8T Quattro. There's not much difference generally but the Audi far cheaper on motorway runs.

Both used the same, around our local villages mainly short tripping, the Jazz will do 45 ish , on a run its pretty much bang on with the 330, 40 mpg at 70 mph , 80 sees 32.
The reason I took the Jazz is now I have a large dog, the E46 is just too impractical, tbh I wasn't overly impressed with the motorway fuel consumption, but it would sit happily at 80 ( allegedly ).
This was based on me driving both cars, going off the computer, but backed up with the same amount of fuel being put in each one, if anything the Jazz was slower because it lacked the overtaking ability of the 330, so slower on the A roads.
Not a very scientific comparison I grant you, but as a rule of thumb it will do.

If you drive "for fuel economy" then the smaller engined, lighter car with less drag (smaller tyres etc) will use less fuel. End of.

Can you drive a Jazz in such a fashion to use more fuel than a 330? Of course you can, but that just proves you are a terrible driver............

I have a 11 reg GG6 Jazz and have done about 3500 miles since buying it in Feb. In that time it has been mostly in town, some motorway journeys at, err "motorway" speeds, quite a bit of thrash and on uber economy run. It is showing just over 47mpg in my ownership and 65mpg is there for the taking. I would expect a 330 to use double the fuel
