The GF had a little car park incident on Friday. Her car door was hit by a car reversing into the space beside her. The damage would suggest the car door was open and the other car backed into it. The edge of her door is crumpled and the rear light cluster and bumper of the other car has a vertical line of damage down it about 8 inches in from the side of the car.

However there are always 2 versions of the events and who is to blame.
My GF (Espace) says: She had just returned to the car and walked through the empty space beside her car and opened the door. She then had her hand bag on the seat and was rummaging through it whilst still standing besisde the car when there was a crunch right behind her and the car rocked.
Other woman (Mondeo) says: She was reversing into the space and the door was flung open into her path. (no reversing sensors on the Mondeo, I think)

The damage fits both scenarios.

So far no sign of CCTV being available. I checked the area and couldn't see any cameras but they may be well hidden. GF is checking with the car park company today.

I have a pretty clear idea of how I want to go forward but would like to throw it over to the PH massiv without prejudice to see if I'm barking up the wrong tree. (I've little doubt my GF is telling the truth because her daughters were there and they'd love to say mummy caused an accident if they could smile and they all say they'd just got back from the shop and weren't going to it)

Bumps in car parks are a proper minefield. The onus is on the reversing driver to ensure it is safe to manoeuvre so that might be in your favour, however the insurance co. will probably settle 50:50 unless you've got some concrete evidence.

Had your girlfriend driven into the bay, or reversed in?

If she had reversed in, a car hitting the open door would have pushed back to being closed, where your girlfriend was stood rummaging? If she had driven in, it would have pushed the door beyond its open position, and you'd have hinge damage? Either way, pretty sure you'd hear an incoming reversing Mondeo, given the exhaust would be coming at you?

Sorry OP, but the door being opened in the path of the Mondeo fits to me as the most likely scenario.

I can't think of anyone oblivious enough to open a car door whilst a car is reversing next to them.

I'd put it on mondeo lady not using mirrors or proper observation

If one object is stationary and one is moving I find it hard to believe the stationary one can be at fault.

Unless your GF was IN the car and opened her door into the path of the reversing Mondeo I fail be believe she can be liable

Does your lady have a receipt from the shop?

A time stamped receipt showing that five minutes before the incident she'd just finished her shopping would add credence to the story of her getting into the car rather than getting out, about to go and do her shop...

Cheers, the receipt idea is a good one.

She had driven into the space and the damage is end on crumpling of the edge of her door. Perhaps if there had been more speed involved or the door was more fully open it would have been forced open but it seems to have dug in edge first and put a vertical crease into the back of the Mondeo.

As for not noticing the sound of a reversing car I'd put that down to distraction. She doesn't hear (or ignores) half I say anyway smile

If the door wasn't fully open, then would she not have been hit first as she was rummaging in the bag, or at least have been uncomfortably close to the reversing car that it would have been impossible to be unaware of it? If the door was fully open, I'd expect it to have been pushed beyond it's normal opening range and damaged the hinges more than the edge.

as others have said, it sounds more like it was opened into the path

Your missus is saying that she had no idea that a car was reversing within ....what 12-24 inches of her and she was rummaging in her bag for something while standing outside of the car, she's telling you porkies OP default mode for women in minor prangs.....
