Unfortunately less than a week into ownership of my new (new to me
anyway) car, it has lost a battle with a parking ding. I reckon it happened on the drive , shared driveway, and my neighbours have young enough kids so can see how it likely happened.

It happens of course and I'm not too bothered, although my dark blue car now had a white chip on the rear passenger door. I'd like to protect it from getting any worse so was looking into the touch up pens. I've found one to match the paint code and it's only a few quid. I could get a chips away dude round of course but the car was cheap enough, I'm not sure it'll be worth spending lots on it.

Has anyone any experience with using these, hints or tips. I'm not the best when it comes to DIY, bit of a white collar boy. hehe

I've used Chipex on a couple of my cars and it worked well. It sounds as though your chip is fairly deep so you may need two or three applications to build the paint level up. The colour match was perfect on mine.

It can work if you take your time and do it carefully. Build it up, then polish it down to merge it in. Just after I got my TVR, a roof tile fell off the roof and landed on the bonnet leaving a small chip that had taken off ALL the paint layers so I could see white glass fibre. I didn't use a touch up pen because I couldn't find a matching colour but used a pot of paint from TVR and built it up as I described. You'd have had to be searching for the damage to notice that anything had happened.

What do you use for polishing off?

I'm useless at applying touch up paint (usually the (un)official items which have separate paint & lacquer bottles, does the Chipex stuff justify the extra price?), at best getting a blob of paint over the original chip.

Chipex is really good. I've spend a couple of days with the owner. He used my car for some before/ after pics
However - as the owner of Chipex freely admits - "Don't expect the same results a complete respray of the panel"

On a really deep chip, apply superglue into the chip using a cocktail stick. It will dry and not shrink back too much. Then when dry you can apply colour coat and it saves a lot of time

Some of you will remember this thread from last week, I was reasonably calm as accepted these things happen.

However this morning I've noticed another larger chip on my door. The car has been parked in the same place all week so don't have to be fking Ironside to work out who did it. If only they would own up it wouldn't be too fking bad the total fking wkers!!

I've moved my car from my space to a more awkward place outside my house, but fk 'em at least my doors will be safe!

Back to the original question would a touch up pen deal with this?

Sorry, No idea why the image is round the wrong way!

Chipex will. It will need a few thin coats.
