Hello,

Having gotten a new job which means Ill be travelling 44 miles each way, 5 days a week, I can no longer afford to run my E46 325Ci as Ill be stumped on fuel.

I'm looking at a new car, I thought about running 2 cars but insurance will kill me @ 22 - Plus I live in a crappy area for insurance quotes too frown

As I'll be getting rid of my E46, Ill need something reliable, german and Diesel (I assume this is the best option for an 88 mile a day journey?)

My prime choices are either an E39 Diesel (530/525) or perhaps an E Class circa 2002-2004. I've heard horror stories with both of these cars but coming from a BMW I can't bring myself to go to anything different, other than a BM or a Merc.

Budget is approx 2-4000 and Car must be auto.

Any suggestions? Would the two choices I've got make sense? Or am I walking into a potential money pit.

If what you got is a good en stick with it. The new mileage isn't monster and a change of car for what...? An extra 10 or 15 mpg? Overall it's peanuts.

Think so?

To be honest, for me a full tank is 80 quid and doing 80 miles a day I'm looking at filling up every 3-4 days - MPG isn't great on my E46 :|

It's difficult to advise until you have a new car in mind. You need to factor in all the other costs to. Sorry to sound negative but the daily savings from an extra 10 or so mpg are minimal. What's the 325s current mpg?

Until recently I run a 2011 seat Ibiza 1.6tdi on a 100 mile daily commute mostly motorway and rarely hit 50mpg.

hahaha, it's currently giving me approx 18-20MPG in urban driving. On motorways it hits about 27-30 at most. With motorway driving I get about 300 miles off a full tank but day to day, no more than 260.

I'm looking at an E39 Diesel auto or an E Class - So those are the two prime candidates.

Ah.. Possibly 30mpg more depending what you go for. I can see a potential saving!

With the best will in the world you are not going to get something that is going to make a huge difference to the cost of your commute - even something that does 50mpg is only going to halve your costs. (tank and a half per week in the current car= £120 at 25mpg so lets call that £60 at 50mpg)

Can you not move closer to work - this would save you the tedium of an automatic german oilburner, and you get 2 hours of your life back per day

If you cant move, the only way you can really save on this trip is to get a sub £500 mondeo diesel, and hope it doesnt break

Mega tempted to just get another BMW - E39 530D is prime candidate but apparently those are a potential money pit with a string of problems?

Also, my car isn't in "great" shape - Some underside plastics missing, few scuffs etc. Should I go private selling or just try PX it?

Better the devil you know. If your E46 is well sorted then stick with it. An E39 diesel, or MB equivalent, has the potential to throw some bills your way. The economy is also not that much better.

Somewhere in the late 30s / early 40s is possible from a big diesel. My C320 cdi averaged 36 mpg and would touch 42 mpg on a long, but steady, motorway cruise. By comparison, my E38 530i is on 31 mpg average and will do mid to late 30s on a similar motorway run.

At your price point sticking with an M54 powered car, preferably in manual guise, would be my recommendation.

Hmm, I've heard that a lot from people - But to be honest the 88-90 mile trip will all be motorway/A Roads, so perhaps a Diesel would be a better choice.

Furthermore, my E46 is an auto so it really drinks, and it's on it's last few legs with constant issues popping up haha.

I'd love an E60 but apparently theyre only half decent after 2006.
