I've installed a Dolry HiFi Stone adapter in my car to allow me to play any audio from my iPhone to my car stereo.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Dolry-HiFi-Stone-AirPlay-r...

The system works great but there are two very annoying problems that I'd like to try and solve:

1. As the Dolry is powered through a 12v to 5v cigarette adapter which only switches on when the ignition is turned on. Because the Dolry unit takes about a minute or two to boot up, it can be quite annoying as you can't play your music right away as the AirPlay host takes a little while to come on.

2. As the unit is plugged into the ignition, switching off the car engine stops the music instantly which is again very annoying when listening to something (especially radio), and you have to either sit in the car with the engine running when you park up or want to continue listening, or simple switch off the ignition, and then turn it back on again to turn the Dolry back on (another two minutes for boot up), etc, etc....

My car stereo stays on when the ignition is off and can also be switched on when the key isn't even in place, so is there any way I can get the Dolry to do the same?

The easiest solution I can think of is to use a USB battery charger and have it running as a UPS type of set-up, or is there a simply way I can tap into the battery without the risk of draining it?

Do you have a USB port on the headunit itself?

It looks like the Dolfry thing you have is powered by the 30-pin connector as I can't see any other connectors on it. So if you have a USB on the headunit just plug it into that as that will be powered on with the stereo even after the ignition is off.

This has a low-voltage shut off function. So just plug this into the cigarette lighter and forget as it won't drain the cars battery.

That's a little more than I was hoping to pay to resolve this.

The HU is a factory fitted BMW Professional HU without a USB option so there's no USB power source apart from that from the 12v cigarette adapter.

I'm thinking a portable USB battery charger might be a better option (and cheaper)...

Can you not stream directly to the head unit? The one in my 335d does.

Wildcard option: I wonder if your headunit has RCA connectors on the back. If so, you could scrap the dolfry altogether and wire the RCA leads up into the armrest centre cubby hole? No waiting for it to boot up etc...

Are you using Bluetooth? Is so, no. My HU is not BT enabled frown

Also no RCA connectors on the back of the BMW Professional HU.

(Not mine but I've taken it out many times to install my Parrot BT kit)

Hmm I guess this is going to be difficult as I coudn't seem to find any car based voltage detection circuits that plug into a ciggy adapter after a quick google. I think your only option is to hardware one in but that's a whole new can of worms. I did see this on ebay. You can manually switch it off.

So you want the Dolfry thing to be powered up all the time the head unit is powered up?
You could use the antenna power output from the back on the sterio. This should be a switched +12v that you could hook up to a USB cigarette lighter adapter to provide the +5v for the Dolfry.
If your car has the antenna built into the rear demister, it will almost certainly have an antenna amplifier that will use said +12v switched source.
Just buy a cigarette lighter USB adapter from Poundland and get butchering smile

Looks like I'll try the USB battery route first. $20 for a 10,500mA battery. That should hopefully keep the Dolry powered the whole time and my commute to work in the morning should keep it charged. It just means there will always be a Wifi network near my car all the time! hehe

May I ask why you wouldn't use my solution?

Pin 13 gives you the radio switched +12v output that you need...
