I have a head unit that I intend to fit however need some speakers.

I am looking to spend about £50, any suggestions in that price range?

Should there be a question mark after this sentence or are you Yoda?

I got Vibe ones from halfords a year or so ago.

They aren't the greatest but for £40 I can't complain

I recently fit the 13cm version of the above and they seem just fine. If you are powering from the headunit you aren't going to get the best out of any speaker anyway so no point paying more...well, that was my reasoning.

I bought a set of phonocar components for around this and they weren't half bad at all. Almost as good as the Focal A1s I had that cost double.

+1 I've ran these too (but the 6.5" ones) As a rule I'd say avoid halfords rubbish but these are decent and can take some abuse power wise.

I've always put pioneer kit in mine, I changed the ones in my BMW to pioneers. Good bass sound from them. I think most of the main brands do good kit though. But then new cars seem to have good systems in already

I bought some Infinity Reference 6020cs from ebay about 3 years ago (probably paid £50-£60), they replaced stock Mk5 Astra speakers - the difference was good but perhaps not as good as you'd think. I then deadened the doors (again, bought a load of Brownbread stuff from ebay) - that made a notable difference too.
I've since added a genesis amp.
But the biggest difference I've noticed was when I changed the Infinitys for some Hertz ESK165.5 (£140 though).
The amount of bass, more defined mid-range and proper treble compared to the Infinitys is quite marked.

For £50 now I'd give these a go:

Just put 3 x 12 inch sub woofers in the door cards? Pretty sure I've seen that done in max power before hehe

I'm sure it sounds a bit better than OEM (maybe)

tbh for a default setup running off a headunit you cant go far wrong with the low end JBL stuff

+1. JBL kit isn't that bad in all honesty.

I ended up buying some Pioneer TS-A171Ci Component Speakers which I got from a local dealer that were old stock. Very pleased
