Cycling and lorry drivers

I would have thought it'd be much better to get cyclists in the cab with a lorry driver to demonstrate how difficult it is for lorry drivers when cyclists are pulling up the inside, etc? Rather than putting lorry drivers on bikes?
Ideally you need to do both. It's no good telling one side to walk a mile in the other's shoes and not be prepared to reciprocate.Europa1 said:

And then what would be the point of wearing a camera?

Haulage firms pay enormous amounts of road emissions tax, cyclists don't, I'd me more inclined to get cyclists behind the wheel of a lorry and see it from their perspective.

He also needs to stop using the phrase "no ifs, no buts, no coconuts" immediately. And Dave Sherry needs to hold a better road position when he's approaching a traffic island... although that would mean that there wouldn't be any cars overtaking him that he could punch as they passed. It's a bloody good idea much like the video that showed a HGV halfway through a left turn with upwards of 30 cyclists in the driver's blind spot!
I think a lot of people would benefit from spending two minutes sat in a HGV cab taking in the view from the windscreen, the views available from the multiple mirrors and in a lot of newer trucks having upwards of a dozen cameras on the front/back/sides!
Then with all that information on board imagine what it is like to be monitoring all of those visual displays whilst driving.
I'm not saying all lorry drivers are perfect, I've witnessed a few examples of disgraceful driving a couple of which I should really have been reported but similarly I've seen some of the footage from HGVs whilst navigating central London and the level of stupidity displayed by some road users & pedestrians is truly astonishing.

. And the road is quite fast, so it's quite dangerous to change your position. I would do a shoulder check, personally, but I wouldn't necessarily be pulling out into the middle of that road with vehicles coming down at often 50mph++.Full video:

I do wonder how much his cycling is influenced by that camera though. I think the incident with the car pulling out from the side road is predictable - most drivers, just like most cyclists, are s
t, so I would be out in the road, away from that. Totally predictable for me.Can't do much about d
heads like this though:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zar7Ckm4LyQ
Mr. Sherry is a London bus driver BTW.

I sometimes wonder if religion is an illness, the way that some of the more fanatical religious people will twist & denounce any facts or logic to suit their own beliefs & agenda. Urban is a troll that says the same sort of thing in every cyclist thread, haven't you seen in the past? You must of done.
I believe that certain fanatical cyclists suffer from the same mental problems as the fanatical religious. They will believe anything that fits their agenda & attack any views that don't.
everyones awful, just ban everyone from the roads.
I was cycling down a hill today that had traffic. Over took some idiot in an A-class, I was going faster then him and he felt like is dick was smaller as a result, and he tried to undertake me as I was trying to make my way back onto the left.
Additionally I was at a rather busy T junciton on the major road turning into a side road. did my observation. used my hand signal. moved over to the right side of my lane, closer to the middle of the road.
behind me decides to undertake me with very little room for me to move anywhere if I had to in an emergency.

I pay probably more per mile driven than any haulage firm does, does that qualify me for not being splattered on my bike ?To be honest, as a rule, on my bike I find the most courteous and considerate drivers are the ones in the biggest vehicles, if they have seen you, you are safe by and large, if they cant see you, then just keep away, plus, a decent overtake from a big artic on a cold morning gives you a lovely cloud of warm, if a little diesel scented air, and a fantastic aerodynamic tow.
Faults on both sides but I would like to see cyclists getting prosecuted for running red lights, etc. You would get prosecuted if you did these things in a car so why not riding a bicycle. A lot of cyclists are the most inconsiderate road users but also the most vulnerable.
Other than that there should be a surcharge on bikes and bike parts that could be used to pay for all the cycling specific markings and signs on the road. Would mitigate the I pay road tax argument.

The education needs to work both ways.
Here is a quick video demonstrating a lorry drivers blind spot when turning left. Its quite frightening really.
